Mount Gay Black Barrel Double Cask 7-Year is a rum produced by Mount Gay, the oldest rum distillery in Barbados. It is aged for seven years using a combination of American oak barrels and deeply charred Bourbon barrels. The final blend is then finished in heavily toasted Bourbon barrels for a bold, complex flavor. This rum has an ABV of 43%.

Tried neat just after opening. Big mistake. Harsh. 43% abv and sure as hell tasted like it. Thought bottle was mislabeled and was drinking whiskey. Okay I am exaggerating but given that I have had MG eclipse and XO triple cask not impressed at all with either I was ready to just admit that MG rums are just not for me. I gave this a good 15 minutes added little bit of ice and it really transformed into a really nice sipper. The whiskey taste is still there but so are other nice subtle flavors and subtle sweetness and the harshness was toned down. Really very nice Bajan rum.
Aged in Whiskey and Bourbon barrels.
Nose: Rich and wild. Smoky, wooden barrels. But also fruits an freshly cut sugar cane.
Palate: Pretty dry, a bit smoky and a bit sharp. No sweetness. Warm body with a long finish.
I don‘t like it, but I respect it.
Smoky, caramel and whisky flavours. Whisky flavours not my cup of tea but a very good rum still
This rum is good. Very good. It’s smooth and easy. My only knock on it is after trying funky Jamaican rums it’s almost too easy to drink. It’s easily accessible in NC liquor stores which is a huge plus.
Nose is smooth, slightly sweet and vanilla. Palate is strong vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
Great rum, especially as an entry sipper
Really tasty, no after effects. Found it in the Caribbean.
I enjoy this room. It pales in comparison to its triple cask brother, but it is still good. It’s a bit punchy with the booze, but I do like that on occasion.
normal rum but i don t get the aftertaste i expacted.
Smells smooth but packs a little bit of a bite. If you want to avoid the bite, add more ice. Tastes great; smooth yet bitey with classic rum taste... oak, molasses, fruit.
EN: I had high expectations from this rum and it did not disappoint at all. I even liked Eclipse which is a tough but honest rom. here we have another story.. there is a huge difference in quality.
very balanced, the alcohol level is the best from my point of view, 43% which does not feel harsh, it is round and intertwines quite well with the flavors which I would have liked to have been a bit more pronounced.
a woody and spicy taste, vanilla, leather, slightly earthy, dried fruits... a balance between sweet and dry without added sugar or false flavors

The Smell 9 out of 10
New to rum, but the smell of this is amazing. At first I thought it was banana. As I’m going through the bottle, I am tasting the charred barrel, caramel, even cherry, and other flavors. Taste is good, but the smell is divine. What could be better than this?
