The SCC (Selected Cask Community) Home Base is to become a regular bottling, which is blended from three barrels of the West Indies Rum Distillery on Barbados which were allowed to be stored in bourbon barrels for 10 years and then stored again for 3 months in freshly emptied red wine barrels. The rum is bottled with 51.5% barrel strength and comes in a simple 0.5l bottle with simple label.
The rum already shows clear red wine notes of sweet grapes in the nose. The nose is not sharp but also not very strong. You can explore the marriage of rum and red wine. The spicy rum notes are still clearly recognizable. The Cask Strength is recognizable on the palate without causing the big explosion you are waiting for. However, the alcohol is well integrated and transports the aromas pleasingly. Here the wine barrel is no longer so present but rather typical Barbados rum notes of burnt vanilla, caramel and light bourbon notes come through. All this is good but not outstanding.
I must say I have drunk better rums in barrel strength and also better ones with a red wine finish. Perhaps the rum should have been stored in the wine barrel a little longer. But than again i get all that for 30- 40Euro. This is just so fair. So my full respect to N. Kroeger and Co.. Honest craftmanship and total rum nerds.
Der SCC (Selected Cask Community) Home Base soll eine regelmäßige Abfüllung werden. Der Rum stammt aus der West Indies Rum Distillerie auf Barbados und durfte 10 Jahre in Bourbon Fässern lagern und dann noch einmal für 3 Monate in frisch geleerten Rot Wein Fässern. Der Rum wird mit 51,5% Fass Stärke abgefüllt und kommt in einer simplen 0,5l Flasche mit einfachen Etikett.
Der Rum zeigt in der Nase schon deutliche Rotwein Noten von süßen Trauben. Die Nase ist nicht scharf aber auch nicht sehr kräftig. Angenehm kann man die Vermählung von Rum und Rotwein erkunden. Die würzigen Rum Noten sind dabei noch klar erkennbar. Am Gaumen ist die Fasstärke erkennbar, ohne die große Explosion zu verursachen, auf die man wartet. Der Alkohol ist aber gut eingebunden und transportiert die Aromen gefällig. Hier ist das Wein Fass nicht mehr so präsent sondern es kommen eher typische Barbados Rum Noten von gebrannter Vanille, Karamell sowie leichte Bourbon Noten durch. Das alles ist gut aber nicht herausragend.
Ich muss sagen, ich habe bessere Rums in Fass Stärke getrunken und auch bessere mit Rot Wein Finish. Vielleicht hätte der Rum etwas länger im Wein Fass lagern sollen. Aber ich bekomme all das für 40Euro. Das ist schon ziemlich fair. Mein voller Respekt an N. Kröger und Co. Ehrliches Handwerk und totale Rum Nerds. Weiter so und unbedingt supporten.
