Got the older one, I already tried the 10y Hampden and it was fresh, extreamly fruity and very bright in the taste.
This one is more balanced in the nose, almost no bite. Not that extreamly fruity and not that agressiv. There is still some pineapple and sour apples but not that much as in the 10y.
I can smell wood, sour green apples, pineapple. A beautiful and gently nose. It's high ester, no doubt about it. It has the mark <>H 900/1000 g/hlaa.
The taste goes in the direction of Velier LFCH Hampden, but it's clearly high ester.
It starts with malt, citrus, wood and fruits (sour apple with pineapple). In the middle you get the sweetness and older elements from the cask, as well as the fried pineapple. In the finish is more of the same and the malt at the end.
The taste is very good, I like the malty taste very much. It's high ester and still balanced.
The 10y old is in comparison very fruity and agressiv, it has a lack of older elements.
This one is the better Hampden, because it's more balanced and complex.
Nose: citrus, grasy notes, white oak, pickled tomatoes, green apple, some pineapple, some glue
Taste initial: malt, citrus, wood, sweet green apples and pineapple, salt

Excellent Hampden 9 out of 10

Although continental aged, with always sounds "less authentic" or something like that, these 16y helped to calm down the beast in a good sense. No doubt the initial distillate is a high ester bomb ( big ester, posih, zests, acid, green olive juice...) but the aging really gave something more, added complexity, subtle wood, balancing the whole. A great Hampden in my opinion and some drops of water does not kill him.
