I'm not sure why the trend towards amazingly high ABV rums came about, but it is not without its gems. Personally, I like to not have to put too much work into a rum I'm sipping or sharing, but when I put a little effort into this, it's certainly surprised and delighted me. A few drops of room temperature water helped to open it up quite a bit, and a lot of the sugar and sour fruit started to come out, so I tried to tease even more of that out with a drop of bitters and one of simple syrup and it was amazing. Guyana. Port Mourant Demerara. Aged 15 years in ex-bourbon casks in the UK. Barrel proof 56.4%. No additives
This is a tough one for me - my first Port Mourant and very different from the largely Barbados rums the I have tried. It's a bit challenging. I've read about the petroleum flavors of Demerara, and the initial nose is heavy with that and model airplane glue - it doesn't smell like something safe to drink. I also get dried fruits and earth. There isn't much of the petroleum on the palate, but it comes back strong on the finish. It's hard to tease out the flavors between the nose and the finish - both come on so strong. I'm going to have to spend more time with this one before a final opinion. Would love to hear from other reviewers if these characters are typical of Guyana and/or Port Mourant rums.
One strong pointing favor of Holmes Cay - I love the clarity of the labelling - part of the reason I chose this one as a representative of Port Mourant.
I'm guessing that fans of this style will really like it - I'm just not there yet.
