It’s a mid brown in the glass and looks welcoming, not to light, not to dark. It’s rich looking. After a swirl, legs grow long on the inside walls of the glass. The nose is richer than the Screech I reviewed last week. It’s got orange, brown sugar and cinnamon in there, yet still had a mild harshness to it. I’m OK with it.
The first sip is mild, but jumps out fast with earthy notes with lots of smoke which I suspect both come from the Chaga. None of the flavours from the nose is found in the taste. I don’t detect much heat even though it’s a 40% spirit. The second sip is all smoke. I actually find it unpleasant. The Rum essence is completely overpowered. It reminds me of my favorite Rum, Ron Zacapa 23, who’s distiller decided to try to age that same Rum in a double chard oak barrel. The result was all smokey mess and disturbing. This Chaga Rum leaves me feeling the same. And further sips don’t improve the taste.
The finish is dry and in contrast to the honey which is supposed to be in there. I can detect a slight sweetness, but it leaves me wanting. Beyond the smokey and musty flavours, I don’t get much more. No fruits, no spice, no demerara. I honestly have no idea what to do with this Rum. My gut says I’ll need a strong flavoured juice such as mango or pineapple.
Very smooth with a sweet honey flavour but lacks a strong finish
Certainly a smooth tasting spiced rum. Easy going down and smooth with the sweetness from the honey. Infused in Newfoundland but you certainly can tell it is a rum from Guyana. Pleasant surprise!!
Starts with a burnt cask or charcoal flavour, and, well... finishes the same way. Ive had a lot worse but Im not too sure what to think of this new flavour. Well it wont stop me from finishing the bottle.
Update: couldnt finish bottle, had to give it away.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Not really tasting (spiced) rum, but not all unpleasant.

Very Smokey/tobacco tasting, reminiscent more of a whisky or scotch than rum. Less to my taste.
