I was surprised at just how nice this was.
Only updating my collection a long time after I drank it so my recollection is not the greatest for the details.
Good rum. But too similar to the previous XO. And more pricey. I would rather get the 46% version of R. L. Seales 10.
Pineapple, banana, coconut, vanilla am I in Barbados. A lovely mixture of aromas, A balanced fire in the mouth. I could sip this all evening if there was more in the bottle.
A perfect Bajan Rum with all the subtlety of a Barbados Sunset
I'm not sure this is as good as the classic XO, but this is certainly a decent rum. Currently about $55-65, a decent value all things considered. I think this is a mix of rums from 5 to 17 years old, with the various casks as well.
Nose: Quite a blast of salted caramel, baked desserts, something figy or apricot. A kind of briny richness, yet sweet. Oakiness comes through later, a little sharp from the tannins but nothing too strong.
Taste: First notes come across pretty intense. Clove, honey, a bit of spice. Not an earthy spiciness, closer to black pepper. The tannins give this a bit of a sharp punch, but not in an unpleasant boozy way. On the backend, a bit of vanilla and more honey. The finish is shorter than expected for how strong the initial taste is, not a weak finish but I'm not sure I can taste anything else after 20 seconds or so.
Overall pretty good flavors, a bit on the funky side. Has some bourbon vibes, which makes sense given the casks involved. This mellows out a bit with ice, definitely prefer it neat though. Give it a shot unless it's $70+.
Color is orange-gold. Molasses and a little cinnamon on the nose. To drink, it is smooth with subtle flavors of baking spices. No significant burn, very easy to drink.
Had a tasting with 2 Mount Gay XO's :
Reserve Cask Rum and Triple Cask Blend
Both reminds me to the song "Tie a yellow ribbon 'round the ole oak tree"
Nose :
Reserve Cask : oak, overpowering oak. Sorry, but I cannot smell something else
Triple Cask Blend : the Cognac is in front and a little wood in the back. Nothing sweetness
Palate :
Reserve Cask : oak again, a little dark chocolate and honey. Better drinkable with ice
(smoother)
Triple Cask Blend : the alcohol comes with sharpness and you can taste the cognac.
Orangepeel in the back. With ice : a nice caramel note
Finish :
Reserve Cask : short, bitterness, oak, spicy
Triple Cask Blend : medium, a little salty, maybe salty caramel
All in all okay, but for me a little to spicy and woody. The Triple Cask is a little better
It smells of carmel and oak with a hint of dried fruit.
On the tongue it is tantalizing with full flavour of above as well as a firm bite to let you know it is actually 40%. Flavours of toasted brown sugar with dried fruit are prominent. The finish is proper and long leaving you enough time to dream of the island of origin.
After having this rum a couple times, the anticipation is still incredible. I try not to have it too often so as to make the bottle last longer. Thatβs how you know a good rum.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Very good rum for the price, well balanced, not too sweet, nothing exceptional but a good sipper.
