109 Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Ratings

This is one of the 23 rums that I have tried since I stopped submitting reviews 8 months ago. It is only one of two that warrant my repeat purchases. I did try their 1703 Master Select, which I would have rated as a 9, but at one third of that price and this one being almost as good, this one is certainly a better buy.

There seems to be two camps on this rum from Mount Gay. One camp still prefers the original MGXO. That is one of the few rums that sank so low in my ratings and so fast. I happen to be in the second camp that prefers this new MGXO Triple Cask from a new Master Blender. The first camp seems to hate this one. I will also take this rum any day over most of the Foursquare ECS rums that taste like bourbon. There is an art to blending rather than lucking out with one good cask.

Had a sample of this, which confirmed what I suspected - that Mount Gay isn't for me. Very much as a distinctively different flavour to Foursquare - fruitier, with something I suspect is the cognac cask influence. There's brown sugar and some solvent there, balance and interest, but not enough depth or evolution for me. Perfectly drinkable but couldn't imagine buying it without thinking I would have preferred something else.

Near perfection. Bourbon-like smoothness and complexity. Vanilla on the nose with vanilla and tobacco complexity. Simply spectacular with a splash of coke.

I do not recomment this rum. It is a decent $20 rum that sells for $55. If your friend offers it to you, certainly take it, but at this price you can find better.

I have been looking for a good priced rum to use as a sipping rum for the evenings. I was using Kirk and Sweeney, but do not like their new reformulation. For the price, this is outstanding. You must like a good, strong rum without any added sugar. I have found most of the high rated sipping rums I have tried has too much added sugar. I want to taste the rum and not sugar. I drink this either neat or with a few (not more than 2) ice cubes. The melting water from the ice does release more flavours and makes the drink more subtle.

I like this one better then the old or normal XO. It's a tad sweeter, more flavour, nice after taste, moderate burn. I gave the normal XO an 8 and i think this is better but not a 9. Too bad you cant give an 8.5!

My Rum Journey began with Tiki. I bought the necessary rums to make the drinks that I enjoyed. I used Martin Cate's categorization system to make sure I covered my bases. I discovered the vastness of the category through this method.

At this point I was still a devoted whiskey drinker. Rum was not a spirit to be sipped, coveted, or collected.
Oh, how that has changed.

In less than a year, I have tried over 100 rums and narrowed my preferences down considerably. I have learned which production methods, aging processes, and even individual stills I prefer.

As it turns out, rum from Barbados is by far my favorite, followed closely by Jamaica and Guyana, with St. Lucia and Trinidad rounding out my preferences. By no means do I intend to imply that rums from other countries cannot be good, in fact some Puerto Rican and Panamanian rums rate highly for me, but in a direct comparison there is simply no contest.

I hope you've enjoyed my long-winded ode to Bajan Rum, lacking any specific purpose other than to express my personal preference.

In short, Mount Gay XO Triple Cask has awakened something deep within me, driving my pursuit of rum perfection in a new direction. Hey, that rhymes!

Enjoyed this rum neat. It was super smooth and not too spicy. Theres definitely an apparent oak/aged taste but it isn't spicy. It has flavors of vanilla and caramel but not over powering. I would compare its profile similar to flor de cana 18 or my doorlys 12. I would definitely purchase again! It does not disappoint.

En lättdrucken inte alltför söt rom med lite kryddig smak. God att sippa på, lite spritig.

A slight upgrade from the MG black barrel. Almost no harshness, and finishes like honey. Amazing for sipping
