First of all, the proof should be corrected as this spirit is 35% alcohol, not 40%. This is a very palatable, sweet Balkan "room" that has a strong molasses feeling and that nice amber-brown color. That being said, allow me to don the tinfoil hat. The European Union has forced Maraska to change this from a "rum" to a "room," and while their explanation is that "real rum comes from the Caribbean," I, and the only two people on the internet I could find with independent reviews on this rum, call BS. I would not be entirely surprised if this were vodka dressing up to be a rum, like a cubicle-dweller donning a pirate's regalia for a Halloween office party. Can I substantiate this claim? No. Has Maraska ever said they use sugar cane or molasses as their distillation base anywhere? Not that I can find. It might legitimately be, and I want to believe! In fact, I don't care all that much. But just a rabbit hole I thought you might find worth knowing about. Whether or not it's properly rum, it's a pleasant drink that is reminiscent of rum enough thanks to all of its dressings. The aroma is nail-polish-like and its sweetness makes it unappealing to consume in larger quantities, but its flavor is nonetheless pleasant. It's nothing amazing but it's cheap and in a market with few to no options, so if you're in the Balkans and are in need of something to evoke the feelings of that tropical spirit we all know and love here, then this is by no means a bad choice. Is it rum? I don't know! It's room. At least it's decent.
With goldish color, sweet aroma and soft taste Maraska rum is great for both cocktails and plain drinking.

Technically not even a rum. But even if it was one, it would be quite a unique one known for its gasoline-like flavor. Absolute no.
