You certainly get a hint of what Trinidad rum is about. Rather on the dry and leathery side, but still sweet (due to dosing, that is).
Underwhelming rum for it's genre. Not comparable to Plantation's 2001 Bahama or Jamacia.
Still, this was far from a bad rum. It was pretty good actually. Still,
Okay...so that was a little over-romantic.
However this is one very nice and delicious rum. Another winner from C. Ferrand and the Plantation company.
Up front I have to let you know that according to testing this rum is somewhat sugared but not overly so.
With that being said I must tell you that I really like this rum. It is a rich amber color with nice legs as revealed with a snifter swirl. It has a very, very nice aroma with noticeable vanilla.
It does have a sweetness to it with noticeable vanilla and caramel undertones. There is no burn but a nice warming sensation in the back of the through. I do notice a minor amount of tannins from whatever oak barrels in which this was aged. The finish is long and sweet but not too sweet.
Frankly I though the Trinidad 1999 rums were long gone but found bottles still available at Total Wine and More in Jacksonville, FL. But better get a bottle while you can. They are really hard to find.
This is a totally underwhelming rum for it's genre. After trying Plantation's 2001 Bahamas and Jamaica offerings for the same price, it's an even bigger upset.
I'd echo what Steven Cooremans wrote, adding that I got a lot of smoke, spice, and a sharp bit of alcohol that isn't generally as prominent in aged rums found in this premium of a category.
Sad to say this will be a mixer rum.
Average sweetness with some alcohol harshness. Complex taste: mainly smoke, some oak, some freshness.
Had this at Eat Street Social in Minneapolis, Mn. Really nice rum that is really light on the tongue.
I tried this one yesterday at Fat Cat Pie in Norwalk, CT. Their distributor suggested it when Fat Cat ordered more Jamaica 2000. It's very smooth, soft, gentle, but strong. I'm still learning how to distinguish particular flavors, but I detect hints minty and lemony. It's not hard like Jamaica 2000, perhaps not as rich or textured. though I still prefer Jamaica 2000, I can see myself switching over the summer to this latest addition from the Plantation line. Another winner.

A good smoky Plantation 7 out of 10
The Plantation Trinidad Old Reserva from 1999 was one of my first plantations I drank and accompanied me at the beginning when I entered the world of rum. At the same time I also drank the Angostura 1824 and the two Trinidad Rums are already very different. The plantation is rather sharp in the nose. On the palate the sharpness remains, but it is accompanied by a very smoky note and is not unpleasant. There is also some sweetness but the smoke dominates this rum. I was very touched by this and it showed me that there is more than just sweet rums. Overall a solid rum for under 40Euro. But not 100% for beginners.
