Tasted at Hot Joy near San Antonio's Riverwalk, 2/19/23
Smells sweet and sterile - like a rubbing alcohol lollipop ๐Ÿญ
Is it possible this tastes like prickly pear? ๐ŸŒต Because that is what pops to mind. I'll admit my lips are tingling a bit.
Drink this neat to impress your friends, then relish the burnt marshmallow finish while you wonder why you drank such a high proof neat.
This is a sweet and tasty rum and I am issuing a warning to not ignore the proof because it does have a bite.

Tasted at Hot Joy San Antonio. Rich gold color. Hot anesthetic aroma Wittโ€™s dollop of butter. Flavor smacks you with the heat, but I get apples and butterscotch. After a few drops of water, the candy sweetness jumps out with a big bolus of taste explosion. Really good.

I picked this up at Hacienda Santa Ana (same place that makes Ron del Barrilito) for about $20 after a tour of the place. Compared to their other two* offerings that sell for quite a bit more, I wasn't expecting something so tasty. This has some of the same flavors of their Barrilito brands, but with max strength and a much lower price point; it's ideal for a mixing rum. It hits like 138 proof ought to if you're drinking it straight (which I definitely don't recommend). But it tastes really GOOD. I recommend it as an ideal mixing rum. I wish I had picked up more.

*they make 2-star at about 30 bucks, and 3-star at about 40bucks. Also had limited editions 4 and 5 star, and most likely only available on site for $300 and $750 respectively.

Incidentally, Fernandez does not distill at the hacienda or anywhere else. They buy clear neutral cane distillate from nearby (assuming the Dominican half of Hispaniola, or perhaps even bacardi) and then macerate for a time with herbs and spices according to Pedro's original 1880 recipe for "rum from the little barrel". The bottles all say "prepared by". The 2 and 3 stars are barrel aged on site. They didn't give too much info on the Santa Ana, but I'm guessing it's aged *with* oak off-site (instead of *in* oak and on-site). That's just my educated guess. I also recommend their tour if you're in the San Juan area.

Itโ€™s what Santa teresa used to be before they changed the formula, nose has slight burn but caramel notes comes through, a tiny bit too sweet on taste but barely, well balanced and then finish goes a bit harsh
