Duncan Taylor 2003 Fiji 10-Year

This Duncan Taylor bottling is a pot style rum from the South Pacific Distillery in Fiji. The rum was distilled in 2003 and was allowed to store in oak barrels for 10 years. The rum was then bottled at a cask strength of 54.8% alcohol as a single cask without coloring, sugar or filtration. There are 284 bottles.

The first thing the rum has is a very aggressive ester nose. So let the glass breathe for 60 minutes. Then the alcohol is gone. What comes next is a lot of ester. glue and solvent. In addition, a light fresh tropical fruit note. The longer the rum stands, the spicier it becomes. A funky nose that is really estery. On the palate, the rum is surprisingly balanced but still has a good bite. There is a nice light sweetness of burnt sugar at the beginning, which is quickly captured by glue and varnish. Here, too, the solvents are dominant. The whole thing is accompanied by tropical fruit, a fine spice, roasted aromas and some liquorice. The finish becomes a bit spicier with more wood and bitter notes.

A good Fiji and successful rum if you like ester and glue notes. Otherwise you will not understand this rum and should keep your hands off it. If you like Jamaica or Fiji High Ester Rums you can have a lot of fun here.

Der Rum hat als erstes eine sehr aggressive Ester Nase. Also das Glas erst einmal 60min atmen lassen. Dann ist der Alkohol gut verflogen. Was jetzt kommt ist viel Ester. Klebstoff und Lösungsmittel. Dazu eine leichte frische tropische Fruchtnote. Je länger der Rum steht um so mehr wird er auch würziger. Eine funky Nase die wirklich sehr Ester Lastig ist. Am Gaumen ist der Rum überraschend ausbalanciert aber hat trotzdem ordentlich biss. Am Anfang kommt eine nette leichte Süße von gebranntem Zucker, welche schnell von Klebstoff und Lack eingefangen wird. Auch hier sind die Lösungsmittel dominant. Das ganze wird untermalt von tropischer Frucht, einer feinen Würze, Röstarmonen und etwas Lakritze. Der Abgang wird etwas würziger mit mehr Holz und Bitternoten.

Ein guter Fiji und gelungener Rum, wenn man Ester und Klebstoff Noten mag. Ansonsten wird man diesen Rum nicht verstehen und sollte die Finger davon lassen. Wer Jamaica oder Fiji High Ester Rums mag kann hier aber viel Spaß haben.
