From the very beginning, my goal has always been to find the best possible rum at the most reasonable or lowest price. That first year, cheap rums like Cruzan Gold and Don Q Anejo were it for me. Along the way, I increased my price limit per bottle from $50 US to $150 US. It also took me years to improve my formula for best buy, with taste counting twice as much as price.

Then about two years ago, I finally delved into some super premium rums ranging in price from $190 US to $215 US. I am glad that I tried them, but they either rated too low for their price or were simply not worth my money. My formula needed no improvement.

Then along the way, some of my best buys either became no longer available or located too far away.  I have driven as far as 650 miles to obtain rums that are not available in my area. Those very long rum running trips are now over with. The last few new rums that I have tried have been quite disappointing.

So I have compiled my enclosed list of 30 best buy rums. Only 4 of them require a 200 mile trip (that also includes my favorite beaches). As for the other 26, half of them were available when I started writing for this site. The other half are considered to be fairly new arrivals. This list is sorted by overall best buy. Notice that there are no sugar bombs and only a few spiced rums.

Disclaimer: for those living far away from me, your choices would be entirely different based upon your tastes and what is available.

As always a great list from you Paul !

Good rums for a good price that also get here are : Plantation OFTD and Original Dark, McCoy, El Dorado and all the tasty stuff from Jamaica and Barbados. Unfortunately I pay double the price here (taxes and Swiss prices effect).

Too bad I don't get to read any more rum trip stories ;-)

Rene:

That 650 mile one-way rum running trip was in March of 2021.  I had just gotten pandemic freedom via my COVID19 vaccination and I could secure a few bottles of Chairman's Reserve 1931 at three different Total Wine stores. Nothing worse than driving a long distance only to find out that they are sold out of the rum that I want.  It certainly paid to have an account and have my order waiting to be picked up. Of course, to justify this trip, I threw in quite a few more rums that I could not find near home. This holds true for everywhere in these parts. We also have rums that they cannot get. They do this kind of crap on purpose. It is the same shit with the three grocery stores near me. I can never find all that I need in one damn store.

I will be glad when this damn year is finally over with. I went through so many medical and financial problems and I am still here. I have two bottles of good champagne for New Year's Eve whereby I get to listen to the fools on the other side of my lake waste all of their money on very expensive fireworks from the safety of my own back yard. You have seen this place in some of my rum pictures in my reviews.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  But for me, Christmas is all about fruitcakes! I had one the other day that tasted like it was charged up. Sure enough, the very fine print stated that it contained brandy, rum, and bourbon. I snacked on that cake all day and the whole pound was gone in one day. Now I have to lose the weight that I gained from doing such foolishness.

I totally agree with Jagsroy and I loved most of the rums from his list. Especially, ny fondness on NY is my recent discovery. I observed that I somehow prefer rich rums from Guyana and Jamaica, and Barbados is less and less interesting for me recently. I still, however, want to try the Rockey, has anyone got this?

Yes, I have tried some Rockleys. You can still buy the one from RA. It's not a bad one and not a special one either, but they are all rarer than Caroni. https://www.whiskytempel.de/shop/barbados-2000-wird-rockley-style-rum-artesanal-2000-2021-47-1-0-5l.html
