I just finished the book, Rum--The Manual, by Dave Broom. It's complicated by the fact that he's a Brit and many of the rums he discusses aren't available in the U.S. He rates rums based on their mixability with five liquids--coconut water, ginger beer, Clementine juice, cola, and (depending on the rum) in daiquiri or old fashioned cocktails. I bought coconut water, ginger beer and cola at my local Safeway...I had to Google Clementine juice and learned that it's a tart tangerine mostly European, but I found an excellent carbonated version on Amazon--Izze Sparkling Clementine. I've tried them all with varied rums and the results are (to me) fascinating...coconut water mixes perfectly with some and tastes ghastly with others, and ditto with Clementine or cola...sometimes cola tastes very bitter to me. Some mixers develop and expand the rum flavor, while others mask it--depending on the specific rum. The way I've most appreciated rum until now is on the rocks with a splash of club soda, that's been my go-to because I don't appreciate them neat. Heavy rums like Pussers emerge with a splash of lime juice. However the mixers I mentioned are interesting...when you add a bit of acid, citrus flavor, cola, coconut or ginger the flavor of the rum changes dramatically, it either enhances or detracts. I'm into convenience, not fancy cocktails, I'm just thinking out loud and wondered what y'all might have to say about simple mixers...personally, I'll be buying more of the ones Broom recommends--in different applications, they're quite perfect. I'm now addicted to Izze Sparkling Clementine in particular. Ditto with Barritt's Ginger Beer and Vita Coco Pressed Coconut Water. I'm wide open to different suggestions.
I drink mainly dark overproofs and my go-to mixer is tonic water and a drop of lime. Or ginger ale and a wedge of lime. With Coke I tend to prefer lighter rums.
I really like dark rum mixed with pineapple juice over ice but rarely do so any longer. Back when I first got into rum, I used to mix rum into combinations of various fruit juices like cranberry, blueberry, raspberry, and pineapple but had to stop because the combination of rum with acidic fruit juices was a massive trigger for my GERD and LPR.
I agree, and it's odd that Coke mixes so well with lighter rums but (to me) imparts a quite bitter taste with dark ones. Tonic, club soda, Coke and clementine juice are now my main go-to's, and fresh lime is a welcome addition to about anything. You might try the coconut water, it's interesting and doesn't hide the rum flavor. Thanks for your input!
