Taking the three factors you mentioned into consideration the answer is very easy.

My goto everyday rum is English Harbour 5yo that can be found to the ridiculous low price of below €20 in Germany.

Availability dictates a lot of what I can get here in Ontario. My "daily" (i.e. inexpensive) sippers are:

* Rum: Appleton 8 year, El Dorado 12 Year, Pusser's original

* Bourbon: Wild Turkey 101, Knob Creek, Buffalo Trace

* Canadian: Lot 40 Rye, Forty Creek Barrel Select, Collingwood Double Barreled

* Scotch: no real "daily" sippers because none of them are cheap, but Laphroaig 10, Glenfarclas 12, and Lagavulin 8 are the closest to "dailies" for me.

* Cognac: none. Selection here is pitiful and price is absurd for what you actually get.

Bar le moura,

I need to find out when they changeover Mount Gay XO again. I liked the original, but I LOVE the new triple cask. Without a doubt, it is my fav everyday sipper. When they change it again, I'm getting a storage unit and buying as many bottles as I can!

A new one that has grown on me is El Pasador de Oro Gran Reserva. I like it a lot more than it's XO sibling.

Happy sipping!!

Odysseus,

Β

It's funny to me that the selection in general is so bad up there, but you are able to find Buffalo Trace easily.Β  It has been allocated and hard to find for a while in the US, but lately I am seeing it more often.Β  There are othersΒ  prefer that are easy to find, such as Elijah Craig and Belle Meade.Β

aww, found an article sying that english harbour rums last years are all sweetened,

same as el dorado ones...

for the 5 years found hydrometer test, it says 15 grams additives per litre

now i do like cakes and cookies, i do like liqueurs, but coffee and destillates i like only neat

without sugar addition, so after i get those English Harbour bottles,

i know my rating will be a 3 if i feel sugar in the mouth ...

Bar La moura,

Could be so, but both my 5yo and 10yo bottles have the ACR mark from WIRSPA.

Stefan please please read the captain jimbo comment (first comment after this article)

https://inuakena.com/spirit-reviews/rum-review-english-harbour-10-year/

the article was written in 2014, so this sweetening going on many years,

this problem regards 80/90% of the rum produced today, of course english harbour have the authentic

caribbean rum mark, but they don t have any regulation about dosage, 0 to 5 grams per liter is ok,Β

but more (in my opinion) is a scam, it means they cannot produce a good rum so trying to correct it

(the flavour) with sugar ! or they can produce a solid rum but they add sugar to catch taste of people

that want all sweet ...

i didn t see this problem with whisky and other destillates as with rum (maybe some whisky or

cognac/brandy can be overly sweet because of dosage but what i ve tried so far was ok)

Bar La Moura,

That reply is mainly about their Extra Old, XO, which is more or less impossible to find today and also without any evidence.

I'm fully aware of Captain Jimbo's Rum Project that says that the 5yo has 15gpl sugar, but how old is that test(?).

Β I should be very surprised if it today contains any added sugar cause the director of ADL was the chairman of WIRSPA just a short time ago and cooperated a lot with Mr. Seale of Foursquare.

But of course I can't be sure, cause I haven't made any test and haven't seen any recent test either.

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary is my go to rum.

Centenario 12 if I am looking to save money.

Captain Morgain if I want to mix.

Woodford is my go to bourbon

Don Julio Anejo or Reposado for Tequila

Still expiramenting with Scotch, but really liked Glenmorangie Nectar recently.

I used to like applaton 12 rare blend and the new 12yo rare cask is a great successor. I can use it for many purposes on everyday basis; for sipping, mixing and infusions.

Scott T,

Β

Yeah, I suppose that's the sole advantage of having a ridiculous government monopoly on spirits. Stuff like BT is regularly available (but not cheap). There are so many standard rums and bourbons (not unicorns) that we can't get though: RL Seale, Doorly's, Admiral Rodney, Β Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Old Granddad 114, Old Forester 1920. And don't get me started on our pitiful tequila selection.Β
