Rum & Coke

I personally use Myer's Dark rum for most of my mixed drinks, I think it tastes great in a rum and coke and anything else i've ever used it for and is not too expensive. Captain Morgan really wasn't intended for stand alone drinking, I wouldn't recommend it. I don't use high quality aged rums for mixing, there would be no point in paying 3x or more what a bottle of Captain Morgan costs or any other rum in that category for something that you won't notice much of a difference in a mixed drink, imo at least. If you want to drink rum and cola's or any other sort of mixed drinks I wouldn't recommend purchasing a bottle of rum that costs much more than the run of the mill mixer. You would be better off purchasing multiple bottles of an inexpensive rum to get more bang out of your buck. My 2 cents.

Using a top shelf rum for mixing is even more irritating than the time I watched a former girlfriend try to open up a bottle of champagne with a corkscrew. DON"T DO IT!!!!

As for mixer rums, Don Q Anejo had been my favorite until they stopped producing it. Now I use Doorly's XO, Stade's Bond No. 8, Chairman's Reserve, or any dark rum that one would rate as a 6 or higher while costing no more than $25 US. No Captain! No Bacardi! However, Bacardi rums aged 8 years or more are a pleasant surprise, but not as mixers.

When walking into a bar, most of them carry few rums around where I live, so my old bar favorite for decades has been Meyer's And Coke.  I no longer keep that rum in my collection. The Captain was never welcomed in my home.

My go to is Havana Club 7 with Coke Zero. I've always loved the flavour, not too sweet. I leave the top shelf for sipping, agree with the two posts above. No sense spending the money to dilute with a mix. 

Using top shelf rum really makes no sense unless you really don't like it. I used to use the Cuba Libre always with Havana Club Reserva or 7 year. Today I take Plantation OFTD, which has a richer flavor.

Don't use any bottle over $30 for rum & coke. Doorlys 3, 5, 8 or XO are all excellent choices. Havana club 7 is also good if youre not in the US. Plantation OFTD isn't bad but it has some strong ester undertones you might not like. 

I enjoy flor de cana 4 or 7 for rum and coke.

My go-to with Coke is Plantation 5-year. I've actually switched to Pepsi Max recently, seems to mix better with rum.

Boy do I have a treat for you rum and coke drinkers. Pusser's blue label is superb, the Demera flavor comes through in a great way, you can mix half and half add a lime, Nirvana. I also concur Havana Club reserve & 7, also Mt Gay Eclipse is excellent with coke along with Appleton signature or 8. But Pusser's is the absolute best. 

Plenty of good ones, but I like Don-Q Cristal as a go-to, keeping it simple. Believe it or not though, Kirkland Spiced rum aint half bad with Coke either!

anythhing that is not top shelf is good to try with cola,

if you have top shelf that you don t like (today 80% of so called premiums are overly sweetened

stuff, for me undrinkable neat), throw them in cola to spend em ... cola is sweet so ...

i don t use cola zero (this cola contains aspartame if you read ingredients, it s worse than sugar)

i do like rum and cola, 1 to 2 ratio, plus a little bit of fresh lime juice, ice cubes ...

just if i have a rum that is good neat, im not wasting it in a cola ...

And I do prefer Mexican Coke to the American HFCS version - just seems to go better, for me anyway...(^_^)

@Paul B and Jessica, let me start by saying i'm a fan of your comments and reviews before i have to utterly disappoint you lol.

i am really getting into dark and aged rums for a while and the main reason is my dad has been drinking it since he came back from military service and  was stationed in south america (surinam) for 16 months, on his way back (by boat in those days, we're talking 1964/65) he visited many a port in the caribbean and learned to appreciate the rums. but, he never became a connaisseur neither had the money to spend on more expensive rums. and he was a mixer, always coke. and so i learned what that was like. and i still do it, even with the expensive ones. (so far) i can't help myself and about half of every bottle no matter the price will end up being mixed with coke. in my defense it's a splash these days instead of filling up the glass so there's progress lol. i have a long ways to g o! in the meantime know i enjoy reading your and others comments and i hope i'm not hated for my trespassings! let's talk again in 5 years from now! :)

No, I am not offended at all by your comment. As a matter of fact, I always keep those 7 ounce cans of Pepsi on hand (no fake sugars allowed!). These are for the specific purpose of adding one can to 3 ounces of rum and lots of ice. I often leave out the lime juice, so it is not quite being a Cuba Libre. So, what rums do I use for this? This depends upon whatever mood I happen to be in. I did recently finish off a $100 bottle of rum that wound up being a mixer, but no cola with it. I also like to keep various tropical fruit juices on hand for mixing with my rums.

I see that you are from Aruba. I spent one day in 1991 from a cruise ship on your neighboring island of Curacao. I only found one rum from there and that was many years later. It was a spiced rum called Kilo Kai.

Go to for mixing has to be brinleys gold shipwreck spiced. For $21 a bottle you can't go wrong. One of the best spiced rums out there in my opinion. 

Pusser's same price, you have to try it with a lime!

A lot of Ice, Red Bull Coke and some nice spicy rum. Havanna Club 7 or Selección de Maestros are always a great choices. I think the Plantation Three Star is also very good and cheap. I also think that a good coke is 50% of the fun. At the moment i use the "Friesenrum". A rum from a local bottler form North Germany. Was a present and can't be drunk neat. I kill the rums that i don't want in my nosing glas with coke : )  There are not many where i say they sucked in coke so bad that i could not drink it. But there are some for sure. But overall i love some good rum & coke!!!

Not a fan of rum & coke at all, but.......if you haven't tried, Dark & Stormy is the way to go. While it is supposed to be Gosling's Black Seal, I was at a bar in Greece where they had run out. They only had Kraken and TBH it made a suitable alternative (though that might be because I'd already had a few drinks!!)
