About three years ago I had my High Ester experience in La Reunion with the Grand Arome and HERR Rum. I was overwhelmed by this flavor density and became interested in these flavor bombs. Soon after, I had a Habitation Velier 2015 Forsyths WP 502 White in my glass and the fascination grew. Other white nd matured Jamaican rums from Hampden, Long Pond and Clarendon came along and captivated me with their very special flavors. Savanna HERR (High Ester Rum Reunion) rum also holds an attraction, but this one comes from a completely different world and very different from the Jamaican ones. Recently I discovered Mhoba Rum from South Africa, a High Ester Rum which is distilled on a unique self-built distillery. This rum also has a very unique profile and is by the way a High Ester Agricole.Β

I love these flavor monsters and drink them neat in very, very small sips and each drop brings out hundreds of flavors and is unlike anything else.

How do you enjoy a rum like this?

What other distilleries make high esters worth tasting?

Found something interesting at the Wonk. Richard Seale in honor but is he becoming grumpy old man ? And yes, I have known before how these special flavors come about.

I also drink high esther in small quantities. Mostly 1cl, which is enough for the whole evening. I like best DOK and WPE, HERR has too many ice candies for me and in MHOBA I like the quince rather less.Β

RSeal is right about the production of High Esther rum and the poor quality of Caroni. This is a known information. However, his conclusion only applies to the mass market. It is a rum for connoisseurs, they can throughly enjoy it and they also know how to drink it.Β

I don't prefer cocktails, but many also like to make Mai Tai with Hampden high esther rum.

I also like aged higher ester rums neat in small quantities. Β I admit that I don't really like unaged DOK, but the aged mid-high ester Jamaican rums that I have had have been thoroughly enjoyable. Β

Thanks guys for sharing your opinion. It seems not every high ester rum drinker wants to reveal a secret. :-)

Hi Rene,I like to drink high ester rums. Preferably from Jamaica and Fiji. Hampden, Worthy Park and Long Pond are my favorites. I prefer to drink older high ester rums (10 years and older) because the storage makes the rums rounder and smoother without the ester suffering. The continental Hampdens HLCF, <>H and C<>H score particularly well here. The young tropical ones are more direct and very fruity. Here Worthy Park makes great Rums. I like the WPE. But mostly i prefer to drink rums with less Ester, when they are young and tropical, like the LFCH. I also have a DOK, but I really have to be up for it that evening.

I am looking forward to crack my TECA Bottle open as well.

I can really recommend the South Pacific Distillery for High Ester Rums.I think pot still rums and high esters are coming onto the market more and more, which I welcome. Australia, Fiji, Antigua, South Africa, Reunion and even Barbados are on the way.I can also recommend young high ester rums for blending. Instantly upgrade many average rums with a drop. I like to mix my Foursquare 2007 with a dash of C<>H. Terrific.

I love high ester rums, neat, just like I drink all other rums. I hardly ever mix anything. I love the complexity of them, the massive amount of different scents and flavours. But I also love perfumes and tastings of Whisky and wine, I love analyzing smells and notes.

Thanks Mr. Rumantic and Wolfe Tone for sharing your preferences as well.

@Mr. Rumantic, I will certainly keep an eye on Fiji. I'm also looking forward to opening my aged High Ester rum bottles.

@Wolfe, I sometimes like a cigar with bold flavors to go with the rum, just perfect for doing nothing and letting your mind drift with the smoke.
