I see some of you are power shoppers of fine rums. Do you take a few drinks of your new procurement and add it to your collection for future enjoyment or finish the bottle before moving on to the next liquid adventure ? How many tastes until you post a rating ?

I typically drink a few pours, before rating. Some really open up quite a bit once some air is in the bottle, but once i'm happy with the flavor profile I typically preserve the better ones with wine preserver as I do with my whisky in between samplings. I find it more satisfying having more bottles available to try at once so I can easily compare them to each other. PS- Ramon we should probably meet up sometime, I have a feeling we live closer than most. Any where near 37027?

I mostly add a rating on here after the first glass. If I feel there is a significant change, I update/edit my review. I don't usually finish one bottle at a time, but have a bunch of bottles open (currently about 15 I think) that I drink from. Just when I see there are only about 3-4 glasses left in a bottle I will just finish that bottle instead of switching to another bottle again. Cheers, Rob

I try to have as few open bottles as possible. I don't drink a lot as a general rule, so it's usually just one sipper and one or two mixers at a time.

Hey 2.ooohhh ! We are in the same zip code :-) I reside just up the hill from the Cool Springs Galleria Mall off of Mooreland. We probably shop at the same stores. BTW, to the initial question, I have maybe 3 bottles open at one time, my two standards and what ever I have come upon lately to add to the collection. I usually only pick up something new once a month and generally finish them and add the bottle to my bottle collection.

@ Ramon, we certainly shop at the same stores I live over by Owls' Hill and work at Nashville Golf and Athletic Club. lol you're on my commute. To the original question I figured out I have around 40 bottles open currently.

I pass the golf coarse everyday. So I shop Grape Vine right by Publix, Cool Springs next to Academy mostly. I just found Red Dog down on Franklin plus a few more with a few oddball offerings. I tasted Afro Head at Grape Vine, it was like getting samples at Costco, the more I talked to the rep the more samples he poured. They are pretty friendly there. The guy with the British accent at Cool Springs Wine and Spirits seems really knowledgable, he hasn't steered me wrong yet. Red Dog seems like Trader Joes with Liquor. I have to go back and explore their store when I have time.

@Ramon and 2.ooohhh - glad you could connect! I personally rate rums after sipping a glass for 30-45 min, and only rarely edit. However I know many raters take 2-3 tastings to rate, or often come back and update their rating. As for bottles, after I've had 2-3 glasses I usually throw a party and 'encourage' my friends to taste a few varieties. Unfortunately my small London flat only has room for 10 or so bottles, so when I really want a new rum my encouragement turns quite active :)
