Hi rum lovers! I am a rum beginner who is essentially here for my interest in cocktails. I have done a bit of tiki drinks with funky jamaican rums and tried different rums in daiqiries etc. My present obscession is the magnificent cocktail El Presidente. That is when I really started to realize rum in cocktails might actually produce some really outstanding complex and spirit-forward drinks! It normally features an aged but lighter rum (forgive my ignorance when it comes to the categories). My question is, what is your advice for the perfect rum for this increadible cocktail? Has anyone produced a really phenomenal El Presidente? Which vermouth have you paired it with (dry or blanc)? I have tried a few different orange liquers and so far find Pierre Fernad the best pairing. Any advice on this? I have not yet ventured into making my own grenadine, since I think the choice of rum is way more important. Please let me know all your experiences on this fantastic drink!

Hi toggrikk, Not sure if you find my suggestions useful but these are some of my findings about el Presidente. I had the best results with equal mixture of Appleton 12yo rare blend (not the same as ordinary 12yo) and havana Club 7 yo. I used dry Martini vermouth (now I think lillet could do better) Cointreau liquor (but I think your choice is better) and a basic sweet grenadine from some polish brand.

I made one this weekend with Plantation 20th Anniversary XO that turned out really well. Not a traditional version though. Used Pierre Ferrand dry curacao, Lillet Blanc, a blood orange syrup instead of grenadine, and a bit of orange peel. Since it was extra orangey, I called it El Presidente Trump. :) Pretty tasty.
