Never buy a bottle cause it’s fancy shaped, but isn’t it great to find something real good in a fancy shaped bottle. That’s at least what I thinks when building up my private rum bar. There’s some great and extremely expensive and rare rum out there in designd crystal bottles like Angostura Legacy and others not that expensive, but it’s not them I think of now even though it should have been fantastic to have them. My three favorites with more normal price tags is: R.L. Seales 10yo, a spectacular bottle which gives a pirate feeling. Appleton Joy, a very elegant bottle that reflects the elegant contents. The Montebello Winch bottle, a quite simple bottle that’s very nice rounded that I really like.

I like the bottle of appleton JOY (unfortunately I don't own one). I'm also a fan of (old) Dictator and Diplomatico basic range bottles: solid, stable and simple. At the bottom of my bottle shape list is J.Bally triangular flask, everything that looks like a skull or a great and Captain Morgan cannon blast (especially the pumpkin spiced puts me off in every meaning). What are the worst bottles designs in your opinion?

Just picking three shapes from the endless variety is not easy and therefore could change from day to day. So today's picks are: 1. Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve (and other bottlings) 2. Elements 8 Vendôme (and other bottlings) 3. Mount Gay XO You see I prefer my designs a bit minimalistic yet thought out. So sorry to Stefan and Pirate that about the worst looking bottle I know is R.L.Seale 10yo. I like the rum in it but rather do not pay for such an (IMO) ugly and expensive bottle.

Hmm, I also have problem with the bottle of R.L.Seale, I just think I like the symmetric ones more, and this it the only asymmetric bottle I can think of.

Great that we have different taste. Kudzey, It’s really not many bottles I dislike, but if I should choose two it will be the J.Bally Pyramid and the La Mauny Le Noveau Monde which looks like a small football. Harrie, I also like the Worthy Park and the Elements High bottles. About R.L.Seales it’s one of the cheaper from Foursquare despite the great content and the spectacular bottle.

Pirate, I’m not surprised that you choose Chairman’s 1931 and it’s really a great bottle with a great content.

@Stefan Persson; You are right that the price for the 10yo Seale is not excessive but what I meant was that the making of that bottle is more expensive than a plain one and if I have to pay extra for a fancy bottle it better be good looking (like indeed the CR 1931 bottle or the wonky bottle holding Conde de Cuba 11yo).

Great topic and great to see that we all have different tastes of style. It's not easy to choose the favourite shape, but I try. I love the bottle who look like medicine bottles: - Arcane from Mauritius - The brown flat glass bottles from Velier - Plantation or Bristol bottles with the bulbous neck, because of the sound they made when you pour the first glass from a full bottle, it's the perfect "glub, glub" noise. Dislike? - empty bottles (until I made some lamps from) - The new bottle shape from Berry's - Savanna could have a nicer design, but who cares, it's a great rum inside.

Rene, Yeah, it’s always the content that’s really important, but it’s great when a great rum is bottled in an awesome bottle. My only bottle Medical style is the Boukman Botanical Rhum. Haven’t tasted it yet, but it’s a nice bottle with hopefully a great content.

I go for reusability and attractive shapes. One of the worst bottles ever were the old Kirk & Sweeney Rums with a very wide top, smaller bottom, and corks that fit too tight. It was so awkward that it required two hands just to pour some out. 1) Frigate Reserve 15 Year (pictured in my review) - This is what bottles looked like in the 1600's. 2) Admiral Rodney Princessa - The most perfect shape and cork fit for premixed drinks. 3) Topper's Coconut Rum from St Maarten - tall translucent blue with a swing top cork. 4) Ron Zacapa XO - my yearly guilty pleasure and great looking bottles that I never used again.

Paul, Checked out the Frigate Reserve, really great bottle. Topper’s isn’t my style, but both Admiral Rodney and Zacapa XO is bottled in nice bottles in my opinion.

Stefan: I bought my bottle of Topper's years ago in the hopes of finding an even better coconut rum than Brinley Gold Shipwreck. Unfortunately, the Topper's only rated as a 5 for me. However, Topper's are the only rums with swing top corks as found on bottles of Grolsh beer. These bottles are great for storing other rums whereby something went wrong with the cork or bottle. I actually had one bottle break because the cork was way too tight. I saved this Topper's bottle because blue is my favorite color and a throw back to my scuba diving days in the Caribbean. The story on Topper's flavored rums is also quite interesting, with a bizarre twist in there.

I forgot to mention that I only bought one bottle of RL Seale 10 Year in the bizarrely shaped black bottle. I could not see through it to judge how much was left and the rum inside reminded me too much of a bourbon. I tolerate not being able to see through my bottles of Dictador rums just because the rums inside are some of my highest rated. I also forgot to mention the two empty bottles that are placed on top of my rum cabinet with heavy rotations. One is from Papa's Pilar with the fancy screw cap attached to the bottle with a chain, just like those old US Army canteens. It also shows a picture of the most popular bird in Key West, the rooster. The rum inside is absolutely horrible, except for their Marquesas Blend. Great bottle, though. I also gave a bottle to my late neighbor before he died since he lived in Key West in the seventies. This bottle is in memory of him. The other bottle is Origenes Don Pancho 8 Year. I just love rums from Don Pancho and this bottle is art deco in design, just like old Havana and South Beach near Miami.

It's hard to choose just 3 but I would go with the Zacapa XO (Either version), St Nicholas Abbey, and Lux Maderas (A friend calls it a funeral rum as it looks like it's stored in a casket). Honorable mention to Bumbu for it's Pirate themed bottle and Diplomatico Single Vintage (which I reuse to hold my own mixture of rums). For rums that I don't own I would say Appleton Joy and Diplomatico Ambassador.

@Stefan Persson Hey! Thanks for commenting! In truth, i wasn't partial and i left outside the contents' quality. Its bottle is somewhat like "diamond-shaped", a really unique look, which also offers a nice perk/functionality with it, too! It reflects the light and makes the liquid glow; in my thread and review photos, the one i grab the bottle from the front and the backside shot, clearly show that! It simply never ceases to amaze me! @Harrie Sure matey no problem, every opinion is respectable and i am always a great listener, before being an avid talker! Persson fella is right; in one review i read somewhere sometime ago, Seale himself said that this specific bottle doesn't involve higher cost or trickier labor in order to be crafted, compared against normal bottles and its decoration plus materials, are both easy to do and cheap. Nice choices, everyone! To be honest, even though i hate Zacapa brand with passion after tasting the 23, i also liked their XO bottle a lot! But i picked only from the rums that i myself drunk, own(ed) and have reviewed. Thanks for the pictures, as well! A feast for the eyes, first and foremost, before sniffing and savoring, is the best thing ever!

Earl, Yes, I also like the St Nicholas Abbey bottles. The 12yo is also my favorite Bajan rum by moment. Also the Ambassador is bottled in a great bottle with its enormous cork and the content ain’t bad either for a Latin styled rum. Paul, I also think that the Origenes bottles look good, but I don’t own any.

Stefan: I will soon part with my bucks to get a bottle of Origenes Don Pancho 18 Year. One store also has the 30 Year, but at more than $400 US. I am extremely hesitant on that one. If I soon get the 18 Year, I won't be able to sip any of it until the 26th because I am now on antibiotics. Great picture! At a famous Tiki bar in Las Vegas, Diplomatico Ambassador is the most expensive single ounce pour. It is probably reserved for those who hit the jackpot, which was not me because I don't gamble. As for St. Nicholas Abbey, I tried a sample at a rum bar years ago from their 10 Year. The WOW factor just wasn't there for me. Great looking bottles!

In golden ages of caribbean piracy rum was kept in clay jars because glass was too expensive, rare and what worse, easy to break.Or it was covered with some material like straw or leather.

Paul B, if you like the Origines 18 ( You will). The Zafra 30 is made by them and you can get it for around $200 bottle. I think it’s very close to the Origines 30. No comparison to Zafra 21, total different animal.

I like the classic pirate bottle look of Foursquare, and other similar, agreed Frigates is really cool and replica of very old bottle found in Abaco BA. old school throwback was the original Pyrat bottles before Padron bought them and ruined the rum. This French Overseas bottle is cool also.

I really like the look of the Admiral Rodney bottle but have yet to get my hands on some. I also like El Dorado as it looks like the classic pirate rum bottle. Plantation 20th anniversary is a damn club, a bit excessive in my opinion. Also, I hate when bottles are really tall and don’t fit in my cabinet haha. Plantation Stiggin Fancy would fall under that category.

Dimitris, A. H. Riise Non Plus Ultra, it's great bottle, special the black edition. At the moment, I work myself through a A. H. Riise tasting set and I agree with the most here, Riise are liquor for dessert.

In addition to nice bottles I also think that the boxes add up to the full presentation of the rum. I personally find the wardrobe-like boxes the most fancy, like the old box of Diplomatico Ambassador.
