I'm new to (but loving!) aged sipping rums. I know some of the basics of differences in styles (additives vs no additives, agricole vs molasses, pot vs column vs blended). I'm looking for some guidance on finding good representative examples of specific styles to compare. I prefer rums where the bourbon notes are not overpowering, and like the toffee/spice notes more than flowery/fruity ester notes. For example, in limited tasting, I've liked Kirk&Sweeney 23yo and Foursquare Detente a lot, Dictador 20 is sweeter than I like, Mount Gay XO has little more bourbon than I like, and Flor de Cana 18yo has a prominent banana taste to me that I'm not crazy about. So - give me your best recommendation for the style you like the best! If your recommendation is over $100 US, give me a second one, and I'll put the first one on my wish list!

St. Lucia Chairman's Reserve 1931 I believe it is the greatest blend in existence. Blends happily and successfuly many rums together, from different distillation processes with different aging, has both molasses and agricole, the purification (?) procedure and filtration process weren't long and too thorough, so the end result has raw, wild taste and inside the bottle there are edible solids scattered, which turn the serving containing some of them into an explosion of taste that also amplifies the strength of the drink somehow (No81 2012's last serving made me dizzy, even though i can hold my liquor just fine). The agricole mixed in enhances it and provides a noticable spunk that is very pleasing. "Quintessence of the Rum World in a bottle", "Holy Grail of the Rum World", "1 Bottle containing a little bit of everything", is how i would name it. I cannot recommend it enough! For me, it's the best aged sipping rum i've ever put in my mouth.

I think you are searching for a reference collection. There is one from Capn Jimbo: http://rumproject.com/menuitem5.html I proceed in the way that I look at different distilleries one after the other. I taste different bottlings of one distillery until I understand it's character. In case of Demerara you need to understand the profile of different marks. Have a look at this distillery ranking: https://singlecaskrum.com/2020/03/19/14482/ You can also find some links in my profile to different topics. I wonder why Dictador 20 is sweeter than Foursquare. Actually for me it's the other way around. Dictador has some cocoa aroma with spice and Detente has some intensive caramel notes with dry fruits and hazelnut. But it doesn't matter. You already tried some good rums from Barbados. Now I would go on and try some Guyana Rums or Jamaica. Barbados: Detente is a very good representation of Foursquare. Mount Gay XO of Mount Gay distillery. Jamaica: Appleton: Appleton 21 Long Pond: Plantation Jamaica Long Pond 1996 Worthy Park: Velier WPL Hampden: Velier LROK 6y Clarendon: Velier EMB 2010 Guyana: DDL representation (Enmore + MDXC mark): El Dorado 21 Enmore: El Dorado Enmore 1996 or El Dorado 12 (with a lack of complexity) PM: El Dorado PM 1997 Diamond: El Dorado Diamond 1998 SVW Navy Blends: Tiger Shark Velier, Black Tot 50th, Pussers 15 Trinidad: TDL: La Maison du Rhum Trinidad & Tobago Caroni: Velier Caroni 21
