Ah no, i have only the No81 (2012 release, i restocked recently and am going to keep it closed forever) and this one, the modern standardized iteration of it. I found the other versions but actually avoided them, since the reviews and rating here, as well as the ones at Fatrumpirate's, didn't favor them much... But this is my best bottle! Can't wait to taste it! The 81 is up to now, my most favorite piece ever! It matched my tastes and style, perfectly! And it is really unique (molasses+agricole, edible solids at the bottle's bottom, mindblowing last serving that causes awesome dizziness).

St. Lucian Rum is very special, for a reason. I myself fell in love before with their spiced, too. I always liked spiced rum and i immediately recognized theirs, as my most beloved one in that category! Sipping it neat was extremely pleasing, as well. I would love to try their Forgotten Casks and their new Legacy (legacy contains some agricole and has no additives whatsoever!).

I like the dirty notes in their cask strength rum. This is the best stuff after Caroni in terms of heavy aromas, because it's not that easy to get a good TDL. They have also good pot stills (Vendome and John Dore) that can produce these complex rums.

No: 001879 Bottled: 2017 Is my precious. This is it. I am seriously considering to drop everything else altogether and from now on, buy only this and nothing else. This is absolute taste perfection (and smell and feel overall), to me. I liked Doorly's 14 a great deal also. And Appleton 21, but not so much as the aforementioned 2. But nothing compares with this fabulous beauty, this smexy blend; i can even feel the agricole and its hidden spunk! I cannot picture myself drinking anything else, henceforth. Forget the travel, i just reached my destination!

@Pirate No, no, no, keep on traveling! You never know what's behind the next hill. @All Btw, how many different Chairmans Reserve Masters Selection are on the market? It seems there are quite a lot of different versions. I own the Chairman's 2006 Master's Selection: 30th Anniversary Charles Hofer 13-Year (Swiss edition)
Pirate avatar image
Pirate ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท | 30 ratings Author Replied 14 Feb '21

@Rene Rum I think i will be forced to follow your advice. From what i've been reading, Evanius Harris no longer works for St. Lucia Distillers. Somehow, me thinks the newest version is also going to become extinct, exactly as all the previous, numbered ones in the series... I feel really sad. Just in case, i will try to immediately locate more bottles of it. As for the master's selections, none are available in my locale and neither is Legacy (which is said to be like a "poor man's 1931").

Harrie ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ | 91 ratings Replied 21 Feb '21

Some more praise for the Chairman's 1931; no other distiller hits the mark for me like SLD. The 1931 is a steal in a way despite its pricetag and after tasting 6 St. Lucia rums this must really be the jewel in the crown. Anybody tried their new version (Legacy) as well? It fills the gap between the original and the 1931 perfectly, both in taste and price. A must try!
Pirate avatar image
Pirate ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท | 30 ratings Author Replied 21 Feb '21

@Harrie Indeed! 1931 is not only their "flagship" ("best" and/or "most expensive" in their line of products), but very affordable at the same time, as well! I think it belongs in a category called: "Budget Luxury". Few high end/endgame rums are such a "steal" as this one, really... I seriously hope Evanius Harris left the recipe behind, for his successor; it is a very complex blend and from differently aged, plus distilled, rums. I contacted St. Lucia Distillers through mail, to request info about future production&distribution of 1931 and am eagerly anticipating the official reply! This is a unique, magnificent and outstanding product, that i simply can never afford to run out of, no matter the circumstances.

Harrie ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ | 91 ratings Replied 21 Feb '21

The Chairman's (2017) 1931 is the only 1931 I have been able to lay my hands on. It should be not a SE like the other '1931' releases but a continuous product (according to thefatrumpirate; https://thefatrumpirate.com/1931-st-lucia-distillers-chairmans-reserve). The only SE from SLD I could find was the 2019-release of Cyril Mangal's Master's Selection from 2011. My other Chairman's Reserve rums that I tried were the 'Original' , the 'Forgotten Casks' and the 'Legacy'. And then there is also the 100% St. Lucia rum by Elements 8; the 'Vendรดme'. Of all of these expressions I keep at least one unopened bottle in stock but since both the 'Original' and the 'Vendรดme' are considered as 'daily' sippers over here I have a few bottles more.

Pirate: Thanks to some very well designed websites from well stocked liquor stores in NE and central Florida, I now have several stores whereby I can easily pick up my very first bottle of Chairman's Reserve 1931. I chose my store because it also has the new Chairman'' s Reserve Legacy, as well as two rums from Ten To One and a few other cheaper ones. One cannot drive 500 miles JUST to get great rums like these, so I will throw in a few diversions after I score. Note the picture from the oldest bar in Florida, since 1903, the Palace Saloon in Fernandina Beach. Any excuse to go back there again! P.S. Damn, it would not let me upload my picture for whatever reason. P.S.S. My picture now shows up. I had to shorten the very lengthy name to not say which bar it was taken at 3 years ago.

@Paul B Yummm, you made me throat thirsty matey! I'd LOVE to sip Legacy too but alas, it hasn't been imported in my locale, yet! It is a "poor man's 1931" and seems to be a permanent release, unlike 1931, which had been mostly Evanius Harris' personal creation. I am now on a hiatus, hunting actively more bottles of 1931 to store, since its future is uncertain (and i still haven't received the distiller's reply). Cheers!

@ Paul B: I hope you like the '1931' and the 'Legacy' as much as I do and I am looking forward to your reviews! Glad you found a way to get them without paying more for your gas than for your rums! @ Pirate: The good news is, or you must be better informed than I am, that the '1931' release under the label of 'Chairman's Reserve' is also meant to be a permanent release. This is what thefatrumpirate states on his website; "So rather than a limited edition once a year release 1931 St Lucia Distillers Chairmanโ€™s Reserve, is now a continuous release. It is still a very complex blend of Pot and Column distilled rums but the formula is one which can be produced on a regular basis. So the 1931 you buy this year will be pretty much the same as next years. Unlike the previous very differing 1931โ€™s that were released each year." So I put my hopes in his knowledge till I know better.

Pirate ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท | 30 ratings Author Replied 11 Mar '21

@Harrie Unfortunately, this might not be the case anymore. All the 1931s up to now, are Evanius Harris' "children". He suddenly left, relocated to Jamaica and no longer works for St. Lucia Distillers Ltd. I would certainly trust Fatrumpirate, but maybe he missed that information? Which is also relatively recent, at that? Besides, there is a widespread shortage of "Chairman's Reserve 1931"; i might be overthinking, but i think that might be due to it not being produced anymore. I am eagerly anticipating Legacy also, to reach my locale and all.

Pirate and Harrie: Check out the picture that I finally got to upload a few threads above. This pirate statue stands in front of The Palace Saloon in downtown Fernandina Beach, Florida. This is the oldest bar in Florida dating back to 1903. This small city was a favorite haunt for pirates in the day and one of the back streets was named Ladies Street after the former Red Light District. This city in on the Florida Georgia border with the Atlantic Ocean. And I found out that Chairman's Reserve 1931 is plentiful in central and eastern Florida!!!!

Pirate: I got vaccinated with the single dose version yesterday and will be Fully Vaccinated after March 24th. This means more rum running trips! Since I now have an account with Total Wine, I can just order online ahead of time and know very well that they will all be there when I arrive. I e-mailed another well stocked liquor store down there, but they never bothered to respond. I just cannot believe how many places carry this Chairman's Reserve 1931. I went back to read my review on the basic Chairman's Reserve from three years ago. I loved the way that it tasted and it fluctuated between a 7 and a 6 in my rating. The taste remained similar throughout it's lengthy shelf life. Then it did a number on my system and I dropped it down to my rating of 4. Their Spiced Rum has remained with my rating of 7 and one of the best spiced rums ever. With these two past experiences in mind, how many bottles of the 1931 should I buy since I have never tried it? There are no bad reviews, so I am thinking 2-3 bottles. That is a long way to go to get more of them. And having gone that far will certainly make them all last.
HA
Harrie ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ | 91 ratings Replied 12 Mar '21

@ Paul B Both the 'Legacy' and the '1931' are related to the 'Original' in flavour profile though growing in complexity and with an extra boost from the sugarcane-juice distillate. No bad reviews only mean that it is bought by people who like it or lie a little and is in no way a guarantee that you will like it also. Both expressions have a clear and present pot-stil influence, much more refined than in the 'Original' but certainly not less so. So you might not want to overdo things as esp. the '1931' is not what I would call cheap. Ok, the price is IMO more than fair for the rum it is but ending up with a handfull of great bottles that are not to your liking isn't going to do you any good either.

Harrie: Thanks for the tip, but now it looks like that I will NOT be driving more than 500 miles to get my first few bottles of Chairman's Reserve 1931. My first online purchase was picked up this morning as a cheap test run. On this sunny spring day, I drove with all four windows down. When I got home, I smelled something floral and thought that the flowers were all in bloom. Nope! Out of my four bottles bought, my one bottle of Navy Bay Rum had a plastic cap that was one third cracked at the seal before they gave it to me at the store. Most of this bottle emptied out onto my cloth front passenger car seat in my SUV. Only four ounces was left in the bottle. I only lost about $13 worth of rum with this episode and I was not about to make another 50 mile round trip to get another bottle. This episode has really put a damper on me picking up rums ordered online. I will find some other way to get that coveted rum from Chairman's Reserve. Well, at least my SUV now smells much better!

Rene: My SUV actually smells a lot better now that a highly aromatic cheap Jamaican rum has spilled into the seat. If pulled over by a cop, I would just tell him/her that my dog peed there. Had I stood up all four bottles on the seat, one would have most certainly fallen over and damaged itself or the others. I played it safe by laying all four bottles down on the passenger seat. I had no idea that the one who filled my order did not check for the obvious fault with the plastic cap. One third of it was separated from the top part. This was almost like my last cork nightmare with Clairins. I have already gotten a refund from the store manager, but this was a really wild fumigating adventure. By the way, they packaged two bottles each in two separate bags. I should have asked for a small box.

@Paul B I feel sorry for the car and the rum! Car interiors are difficult to clean and rum, even if cheap, is too precious to be spilled pointlessly. I hope it smells nicely, at least... @VikingXO Thank you! It may not be a true connoisseur's Top-Notch rum, or the most expensive in the market, but it is my personal favorite and wraps around it, all qualities that i value! Especially its practicality and friendly price. Alas, most other products are unavailable in my locale. Will note down the one you mentioned though, just in case it arrives later. I also noted Master Select and Legacy. But even if my priorities are whimsical and usually messed up, i never forget my to-do list! Thanks for the suggestion!

I found a bottle of Chairman's Forgotten Cask this afternoon. My review will be forthcoming. It should tide me over until I can get my hands on my first bottle of 1931. I actually have a local store manager trying to find me two bottles of this rum so I don't have to drive about 500 miles. I REALLY don't want to drive that far, but it is near that old pirate haunt that I love so much. Anytime that I have made great efforts in all of my travels, one purpose was simply not enough. I always needed two or more reasons to justify the effort, which always paid off.

Pirate: My perseverance has paid off!!!! In two days, I will be driving a long way to pick up two bottles of Chairman's Reserve 1931 and one bottle of Chairman's Reserve Legacy. My bottle of Chairman's Forgotten Cask helped to inspire me to do this and I now have three of those. I had to order the new ones from two different stores, since they only allowed one bottle to be purchased in each store for the 1931. I also had to get quite inventive in searching for stores because both of these rums fly off the shelves almost as soon as they are placed there. All three are paid for along with 9 other hard to find rums that can be seen in the Wish List portion of my Rum Ratings cabinet. This long rum running trip may sound crazy, but with me now being vaccinated against the virus and just itching to get out and drive some long distances with my music collection and my dog, my attitude was, "Go for it!" It's good to be retired with too much time on my hands.

The distillery hasn't responded regarding my inquiry, yet (if they will keep producing 1931 and at its final, standardized, Chairman Reserve version without future alterations). I hope it won't retire, right after their Master Blender, that would be a terrible disaster for me!

Thank goodness for a super website to guarantee that these rums will be there for curbside pickup. The Legacy versions actually flew off the shelves even faster because they are only $41 US each instead of $100 US. My former boss summed up my appraisal one year with the word Tenacious. How true! Stefan: It was my downright determination to get these rums and no amount of luck. Total Wine has a great website and it was going to be one stop in Jacksonville Florida. I checked a few days later and they were sold out of the 1931. I checked as far south as Orlando and Tampa. Other stores had either sold out of the 1931 or the Legacy, but rarely both. So I found one store a few miles north of Orlando that had both! I placed my online order and also included the other two bizarre looking bottles in the photo. I already knew that well respected fellow reviewers rated the rums inside as a 6, so they got added to the order. I then continued my online quest to find my second bottle of 1931, which was about 100 miles to the north. All in all, it was three Total Wine online orders for curbside pickup and one ABC store to finally get two bottles of Resurgence from an Ocala craft distillery. On the way in, I stopped at my favorite liquor store in Pensacola to see what they had. I lucked out and got the Ron Centenario 18 Year Reserva as well as a bottle of Rum Fire Overproof. I also could have gotten one of two choices on high ester Jamaican rums from Plantation Extreme #4 for only $320 each, but that would have been absolutely foolish to buy on my part. Leave it to Plantation to tone down the funk in cognac casks again. That store's Facebook page showed that those two arrived two months prior, which gave me lots of time to research them first. I was surprised to see them still sitting in the locked glass case in the front.

The only reason that I have not ranked the Chairman's Reserve 1931 as my own Holy Grail is because three rums from Dictador beat it out. I see that you have yet to try any of the Dictadors. This one did beat out my ranking of Dictador 12. I thank you for first inspiring me to make this 1300 mile round trip rum running trip, but when I got my hands on the lesser rated Forgotten Cask and rated it as an 8, that was my final inspiration to just go for it.
