Splashed out a while ago and bought a bottle of Don Q reserva de familia.it comes in a box with a metal clasp on the bottom so you can’t stand it up. It means the bottle is always on its back at a slight angle with the cork partially wet. This doesn’t seem right with most opinions that rum should be stored upright. Should I Pack under the bottom and store upright or trust how they’ve packaged it ?

I should point out that I’ve assumed that the cork is real and not synthetic

The basics are mentioned here: https://www.liquor.com/articles/how-to-store-whiskey/ I use also parafilm to seal the caps even more. "3. Keep Them Upright We’ve all been there: You’re excited to open that special bottle, you peel off the plastic and lift of the cork, and it crumbles and breaks off. Keeping the cork immersed in a high-ABV spirit will make it disintegrate. This situation is easily averted by keeping your bottles upright in storage. Wine can be stored horizontally. Whiskey and other spirits cannot. 4. Care for the Cork Even though your whiskey should stand at attention, it’s a good idea to keep the corks moist. Tilt your bottles horizontally two to three times a year so that the liquid soaks the cork, then restore the bottles to their upright position. This method keeps the cork “fresh” and oxidation at a minimum."

Because I see that the cap is wide. The Plantation Extreme series, in particular, is prone to breaking seals during shipping. Plantation also uses this wide caps. Therefore it would be also saver to wrap the cap with parafilm.

Just curious how long have the salespeople stored it like this for and how long would it take for three cork to be damaged.

I would think that they’d have kept it like this all the time they had it as it’s impossible to stand it up without putting packers under the bottom so wouldn’t look good on display in a shop. I bought it a couple of months ago and kept it flat too but figured I’d ask for opinions . It comes with a glass stopper for when you open it. Doesn’t make sense that they’d supply it like this though when they must expect quite a few to be kept long term.
