My brothers favourite rum is Mount Gay black barrel, apparently it’s been changed. He was telling me why he only likes rum from Barbados or Jamaica something to do with no sugar? Or something I should’ve listened more carefully! Anyway with Christmas coming up I wanted to try a new rum on him to replace his faithful black barrel. He doesn’t like spiced rums and I think he drinks it on the rocks. Can anyone suggest something he might like that I can buy in the UK. Thank you

Try to locate a Mount Gay XO. Not the modern one, the triple cask strength, but the old bottle with black box and golden letters, bearing Allen Smith's signature (the previous, retired master blender). Is a bit strong and harsh, but no sugar, rich complex taste and aged to boot! You can sip straight just fine if you strain yourself a little bit, or mixes so-so with cola, or is just perfect by itself on the rocks with coconut-water ice cubes thrown in (NOT water). Excellent Bajan (barbados) rums without sugar, are those of Seale and Foursquare, as well as the Doorly's range. Unfortunately i haven't found the famous 10y Seale to try myself yet, from Doorly's i only tasted the XO (which is quite nice, honest, affordable) and from Foursquare, i found only their spiced which didn't suit my tastes, so i "modified" and tampered with it. Other rums without sugar, are those from St. Lucia Chairman Reserve (excluding their spiced and very few of their old annual releases), the Appleton Estate range, the Flor de Cana etc. Do a small research and choose yourself, or consult the other person and decide together! Good luck!

Doorley’s 12-year is a nice, pure rum from Barbados. It’s at a nice price point too!

Hampden estate pure single Jamaican rum 8 Year . It is crazy how good rum you will get for the money + no addictives. Or basically all Foursquare would do.

Thank you, can’t find the Mount Gay extra old it seems the triple cask has taken its place. He’s tried a Doorlys and wasn’t impressed but don’t know which one he had..I will have a look at the Hampden estate. Why is this so difficult?!

It seem he is an experienced connoisseur. Black Barrel is spicy, woody and a little bit fruity with Banana flavor. Try to get a Worthy Park. Worthy Park Estate from Jamaica is spicy and fruity. They are famous for their banana flavors. https://www.rum-paradise.de/worthy-park-single-estate-reserve If you want a cheap Hampden you can get this one (spicy rum with backed apple flavor): https://www.rumundco.de/Smith-Cross-Traditional-Jamaica-Rum-07l Or try this one, it's new on the market since some months: https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/55390/appleton-estate-8-year-old-reserve

Cmo, As his favourite is Mount Gay, which means that he likes a blend of pot still and columns still. That means that you can give him almost everything that comes from Barbados, but also Appleton and Monymusk from Jamaica.
