I want to share some statistics I found. Because of Corona the rum revenue sank by 8.4% to ~15,000 Million $ in 2020. Whisky revenue sank by 6.4% to 80,500 Million $. From 2010 to 2020 we spent 20% more per unit. USA is the biggest consumer of rum in the world. Tanduay (Philippines) is the biggest rum producer, Bacardi is the second. There will be an increase in consumption and revenue in 2020. Rum is not as trendy as gin. Gin revenues rises faster. Rum market is not as big as the whisky market. https://www.statista.com/outlook/10020300/100/rum/worldwide#market-globalRevenue If you want to support rum producers, buy now. Prices should be good in 2020 because of the weak revenue.

I'm surprised rum revenue fell because of Covid, I had heard overall people were drinking more but now at home.

Yeah that defies logic a little. I wonder if it’s because folks often order drinks at bars that include rum, and that the bars have been closed? I can imagine a lot of rum being poured on a normal bar night. Multiply that across the world and that’s a huge number. I’ve done my part to keep the rum industry alive in 2020, however! Guess I’ll keep buying more next year too!

One rum brand owner here in London told me bars are in essence a way for them to gain exposure, while the real revenue is driven by people buying their bottles from stores. But maybe the top 3 (Bacardi, Captain Morgan, etc) make money through bars and the rest through stores? It would be interesting to see if that's the case and if so have the smaller producers benefited from Covid...?

Andy, That was my thinking as well. I can’t imagine bars selling that much rum in a night. Everyone I know has been buying a lot more booze for home consumption. Hope they keep sending mine :)

My rum consumption went up with at least 10.000 % just because of Covid-19. To balance it out my wine consumption dropped over 50% so it all balances out!

You guys crack me up. I have a dozen unopened bottles and I’m still looking for more! I stopped drinking wine as well. Have me horrible heartburn anyway! Now, worthy park or hampden?

Before the corona I had drunk about 4 types of rum and bought 2 bottles of rum in my whole life; since the pandemic started I have emptied 11-12 bottles, I have 7 bottles open at this moment and a collection of almost 50 unopened bottles. wine consumption fell by about 50%.

@Immiketoo I would start with Worthy Park Estate 45%. If you want to start cheap I would buy the Smith&Cross (Hampden).

Drinking at home is a huge money saver for me. As soon as I take the first drink, I do not drive and I do not have a designated driver. If I can't drive anywhere, then I am not spending money unless I order music CD's from Amazon (and that has come grinding to a halt because I already have 67 days of non-stop music in my library). To top it off, rum is quite healthy and my A1C results keep going down with each blood test. I just smile and don't tell the doctor that gluten free rum with no added sugar can be credited for this.

Some new statistics for UK: 1. "Alcohol sales in the UK fell 20% by volume in the three months to June 2020, but rum experienced a significant sales boost during lockdown, new data has shown." 2. "In the three-month period between April and June 2020, data from trade body the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) found that 38% more rum was sold than in the same period last year, equivalent to an extra 1.3 million bottles. Total rum sales were worth Β£119m (US$155m) in the quarter." 3. "Miles Beale, chief executive of the WSTA, said: β€œOur latest numbers show that rum is lockdown’s champion, as the experimentation Brits liked to enjoy in pubs and bars carried over to their homes." https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2020/10/uk-consumers-favoured-rum-during-lockdown/

@PaulB You mentioned not having to spend any money while drinking at home except CDs :) I find that if I’m left alone too long with a bottle of rum, I end up buying more rum! Hell, I was looking for a particular bottle and apparently I found it (and bought) from several places. Surprise!

@The Rum Barrel "The WSTA said the strong performance of rum and gin was due to consumers drinking more cocktails and exploring new flavours as the on-trade was forced to close during the coronavirus lockdown." Because of that statement I would say the most of it is spiced or for mixing.

Immiketoo: Living in a state where it is illegal to ship spirits to my door or my favorite liquor store can wind up being a blessing in disguise during lock down. If I were able to order rums and have them sent to my door, no telling how many more reviews I would have. As it stands now, I am probably at a dead end unless I drive more than 200 miles. Waiting on another damn hurricane this evening, this one being a direct hit.

Paul, you should emigrate to Germany, we have also a developed sharing culture for small samples here. Sometimes people share 10 or 20 samples at once. We use Facebook groups to coordinate. I think you would have over 1000 reviews already. :)

@Paul, stay safe sir! I hope you’re ready and have all you need. As for the rum, I have to pick it up from the courier , but yes it’s easy to click yes online and just have it arrive. I got yelled at today for the amount though.

Immiketoo: My dog and I survived Hurricane Zeta with minimal damage to my house. I did not even need to dip into my rum collection for liquid courage. The north eye wall was at least 105 mph for the winds and lasting 45 minutes. My whole house shook at times. My dog was downright terrified and running up and down the house. Then came the calm winds of the eye that lasted for 45 minutes. After all these years, I finally got to walk out into the eye of a hurricane and look up to see the stars. Then came the tattered south eye wall which was not much at all. Then it was time to pour a big glass of Dictador XO Insolent. I was without power for only 40 hours. Friends will be without power for 10 days or so.

@Paul B, I'm glad to hear that you and your dog are well, sounds very impressive to stay in a eye of a hurricane and see the stars ! That must be the best part of a hurricane, unfortunately ! I've never seen something like that. Dictador XO Insolent, truly a good choice

Rene and Immiketoo: Thank you so much for the both of you!!! There is no wind at all in the eye of a hurricane, but one cannot stay there for long since the lower eye wall will be soon coming to slap one upside the head. It was a very nerve wracking experience and only a few evacuated because it was not supposed to have gained this much strength this late in the season. Global warming is to be blamed for sure.
