1) Basically, the more added sugar found in a rum, the less time that it will last on the shelf due to oxidation. The sugar bombs like Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva, El Dorado 12, El Dorado 15, Zacapa 23, and such will have noticeable changes to flavor after only one month in the bottle. This is why I no longer buy any of them. Dry rums with no added sugar will theoretically last forever, although I found two where this was not true, Flor de Cana 18 and Mount Gay XO.
2) Keep your bottles away from sunlight and heat! It is really that simple. I keep mine in a custom made shelf that I built myself in the seventies to store vinyl record albums, so it is very strong. It is open and out of any sunlight. I keep my place at 74 degrees Farenheit year round. I just avoid all of the sugar bombs with 30-49 gpl of added sugar. Any "rum" with 50 or more gpl of added sugar is considered to be Flavored. There is so much sugar in those that any changes to flavor will be hard to tell.
Oxidation takes place with oxygen, not with sugar. All spirits are affected.
The rum does not change if you pour it into small bottles and fill them up completely.
Or you can fill your bottle with glass pearls or use a vacuum pump:
I use my closet for storage it's dark and dry there.
Once a year I flip all the bottles over to wet the cork.

If you're that worried about it pick up some Private Reserve Wine Preserver off of Amazon. It's an inert gas that you spray into the bottle before recorking. I've used it for bottles that I know will sit/not be reopened for awhile.

There is a reason that opened dry rums have a longer shelf-life than opened sweet rums but not because so much because of oxidation. The alcohol prevents bacteria and molds to grow in a spirit but 40% ABV works only soso (80% ABV works perfect). In a dry rum it helps that there is not much in there that bacteria/molds can actually grow on but with sweet rums there is the sugar in a perfect ratio available.
The longer a half-full bottle will rest the more it evaporates but alcohol will go faster than water due to its lower boiling point. So the longer it stands, the lower the ABV will get and the more sugar it will contain (the sugar cannot evaporate) giving bacteria/molds an ever growing chance to get hold on your rum. Just as opening your bottle more often will give them more chance to enter the bottle.
I think that's right, but what is the time period we are talking about?
I had a bottle of Zacapa 23y opened in 2016, just a third inside. Drunked it in 2019, the smell was very light, most of the aromas was gone and the taste was milder that usual. I think this bottle would need some more years to grow some bacterias.
The same would happen to dry rums. No one should keep once opened bottles for a longer period.
So many theories as to why certain rums don't last long once opened. However, I have it all figured out! People leave the cork off the bottle while in heated discussions over conspiracy theories. These heated words enter the bottle and begin to do their damage! And if you believe this line of crap, I have a steamboat to sell you in the middle of the desert!!!
All joking aside, I only had one college chemistry course, so all that I know is that the more added sugar a rum has, the less shelf life one can expect. How and why this happens is beyond me. I just keep track of when each bottle was opened to avoid any of them going to waste. And I really don't care to know about the nasty microscopic details.
You have a point vomi1011; how long does it take to a) a rum losing flavour or b) a rum going bad.
I also like to drink eaux-de-vie/ fruchtbrand/obstler kind of spirits and it would probably take a whole lot of time before they go bad but they loose their vibrancy pretty quickly after opening. Rum (dry or sweet) has more longevity in that respect than fruit distillates I think but they will loose flavour as well, What I tried to say was that dry rums will take more time (once opened) than sweet rums before they might be harmfull for your health. For flavour; finish (while taking care of your health...) a bottle ASAP!

There’s two things that make all alcohol losing its taste.
1) Direct sunlight, so keep it away from that.
2) Oxygen, so make sure that the corks sit tight on unopened bottles. When it comes to opened bottles there’s a rule that says that the bottle represents one year. So if you open a bottle and drink let say 1/3 of it, you have 8 months left to drink up the rest. But you can of curse also pump out the oxygen or you can pour it into smaller bottles to make it taste as it should for a longer time.
