I know the sweetness is a criticism of this rum, so something a little bit less sweet can be recommended, too. However, I'm looking for something equally smooth. So... If someone likes Zacapa 23, what other rums might you suggest?

Hello SlowRain, if you like very sweet rums, I will recommend the centenario, 20 or 30 years. In fact, most of solera rums are smooth, like the santa teresa 1796 for example.

Hey SlowRain - I'm a lover of the sweet rums as well! Zaya, Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva, and Santa Teresa (as Zellrom said) are some of my favorites and on the sweeter side.

The Arcane Extraroma rum is also sweet and surprising, really fruitful. One very good rum, less sweet than solera rums but easy to drink never the less, is the El Dorado 15 years old rum. More loaded with wood flavors comes then the Pusser's British Navy 15 years old. Both of these rums are good ones to get introduced to 'real' aged rums.

As a sipping rum, Zacaya has absolutely no advantage over Zaya, Pyrat, Diplomatico. I am sipping El Dorado , 15 year presently and it's delicious cut with a finger of mountain spring water and a lime twist. This bottle is a gift but I would never buy it because why pay 50.00 for a sipping rum and have to cut it to avoid the after burn. I don't need to cut either of the others and they go down smooth. Is there something about my throat causing this ? Who knows ? I have read that Zacaya and Zaya originated in the same distillery

you can try to drink a great rum, the Samaroli, is most expensive than zacapa, has sweetness but at the same time force, hints of spices

Does anyone have direct knowledge of whether Zaya 12 year and Zacaya are connected in any way. I have read this several times.

zellrom and Andy hit the nail on the head with Santa Teresa 1796. It's very similar to Zacapa 23. There's only one small problem. I've been ruined by R.L. Seale's 10-year.

Ever heard of Kaniche? If you're a sweet-lover, that's a great one. I have the XO and adore it. http://www.rumratings.com/brands/1344-kaniche-xo?review_id=13705

There is a new Brugal, Leyenda, that I recommend for those who like sweet rums

I would also throw Plantation 20th Anniversary into the mix. It is definitely my favorite.

If you can find Cartavio XO from Peru... you will not be disappointed! A beautiful solera 18. Pyrat is good value... El Dorado 15 as well. Yummy!
