Hey guys :D I'm looking for a decent rum as a birthday gift. Something that doesn't burn much and you can actually taste some sweetness to it, or some interesting or unusual taste. Basically a lot of flavor, preferably on the sweet side, that's not suppressed by unnecessarily high burn. As I don't know that many brands, I went looking for Cuban rum and found Santiago de Cuba 20-year and Edmundo Dantes 15-Year. Would you recommend these ones and are they good in terms of low burn and high sweetness? Or would you recommend something else or from somewhere other than Cuba? I'm ok with the 120 dollars or so price for the 20yo Santiago de Cuba, but I'm also not particularly rich, so I'd also like to keep it reasonable in terms of money :D thanks for the help.

Maybe easiest would be to check out the reviews if those rums you mentioned? If you know other rums the person youโ€™re buying for likes, Iโ€™m guessing a few folks could help with similar suggestions.

Potato, for money no object, I recommend my only rum with a rating of 10 at $96 US per bottle. It is Dictador XO Insolent. Close on it's heals at about one third the price is the most popular rum on this site and for good reason. It is Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. Yes, DRE is a sugar bomb, but the added flavors are extremely well chosen just like from one of the best chefs in the very best of restaurants would choose..

Ron Zacapa, Vizcaya, Diplomatico are just a small sample for you to check out.

If you seek sweetness and body, you could give also El Dorado a try. I love the 12 years old, but there are others like 15 or so that are more expensive and could cover your budget
