What are rums that for you had a wow effect and after sip you can say "i did not drink something like that before". I am searching not for ordinary good rum, but for an interesting good rum which is specific or unique in some way. These some rums which for me steps out of common sets of aromas and flavours: Saint james millesime 2001 - new number one for me, really exceptional rum. Then Pusser's (blue label. nelsons blood), Dos Maderas 5+5, Havana seleccion dos maestros, Dictador 12, Depaz XO Which rums found you interesting in some way?

Any caroni rum should do the trick here. You might be slightly confused and shocked the first time you try it, but once you get past the initial asphalt slap in your mouth, it offers a truly uniqe expirience. I love it.

Luke, here are the Plantation rums that I have all tried, ranked in order of preference; Plantation OFTD - a very fine overproof dark rum that easily beats Lemon Hart 151 Plantation XO 20th Anniversary - taste is "Wow!" until half empty and then high sugar content gets oxidized Plantation Artisinal 3-Stars - the second best white rum only beaten by Cana Brava 3 Year Old Plantation Original Dark Double Aged - great for Mai Tai's with some minor hogo funk Plantation Panama 8 Single Cask 2017 - this now starts the list that I won't buy again Plantation Barbados 5 - highly over rated. One gets what they pay for. It's cheap. Plantation Pineapple - totally disgusting pineapple rum El Dorado 12 is also an excellent choice, but consume the final half of the bottle rather quickly to avoid oxygen reacting with the very high sugar content to ruin the taste. My bottle lasted 4-5 months. None of it got poured down the drain. I hope this helps!

Paul - your opinion of Plantation stiggins Pineapple rum is not shared by many. It is not your typical overly sweetened fruit flavored rum but most people seem to like it, myself included. I generally agree with your opinons but there have been a few rums you found to be drain pours that I strongly disagree with, such as Ron Abuelo 12 yr. I found it to be quite sweet but very drinkable and similar to El Dorado 12 yr. Also while I am not a fan of the Plantation 5 yr, it is mainly because it is quite sweet and I can get the same rum as doorly;s 5 yr without the added sugar at a price point of $20 for a 1.75 ltr bottle, which IMO makes by far the best mixing rum bargain around.

Thanks for the Caroni tip, this is maybe what i am searching for. @Luke if you like El dorado 12 you should definitely try El dorado 15 (900-950czk). Or some Pussers if you like more sweet rums.

Caroni is definitely a perfect choice, very unique, very addictive ! Bottlings from Berrys' and Rum Nation are not that pricy. Bottlings at low ABV. Vol.% are usually a bit cheaper and not to bad to get into the Caroni style. But I heard about there are some idiots starts to fake Caroni stuff because the Price explode ! I would also recommend some rum with Special cask finish (Oloroso is extremely special and not mine) or single cask rum.

Scott, I had to go back to my own ancient 5-star review of Plantation Pineapple Rum. So let me rephrase that because this rum is only disgusting to sip neat and not much better on the rocks. At 16-20 gpl of added sugar, it almost qualifies as sweet. If I remember correctly, sugar crystals formed on the top of the bottle under the cap similar to what happens with Clement Creole Shrubb. There is nothing wrong with that, but any syrupy "rum" like these two just begs to be mixed. In the case of Plantation Pineapple Rum, I did succeed in reinventing the Pina Colada to a higher ABV drink, as posted in my review. However, the clerk at one of my favorite liquor stores almost begs me to buy this one again and I refuse every single time. She can't even give it away.

Paul, I am not sure where you got the 16-20 gpl figure as I don't see it on Capn JImbo's master list. I pulled out my stiggins and Barbancourt Pango and tried them side by side. Honestly I find the Stiggins to have a very unusual (though interesting) taste, possibly because it is infused with pineapple barks and not just the flesh. I actually much prefer the pango but would hardly call the Stiggins duisgusting, though I am afraid my bottle may be a little oxidized by now as it has been half full since maybe late last year. I don't see any sugar crystals in the Stiggins and the flavor is far less sweet than the Pango (which I also don't see on the Capn's list.)

Scott, I got the 16-20 gpl of added sugar amount for Stiggin's from the review by Earl Elliott. Some reviewers have their own testing kit for sugar. Others post amounts straight from Captain Jimbo's website. And you are right with Stiggin's not being on Captain Jimbo's list. Supposedly, the sugar testing kit can be ordered from him. As for me, I just quit buying sugar bombs and overly sweetened rums because they don't last more than 4 months and it is also bad for one's health. I also dabbled in premium tequilas, which is much healthier.

Cruzan Blackstrap (very dark) and Smith & Cross (huge funk) seem to stand out with unique flavor for what I've tried so far.

Another wote for cask strength jamaican rum. This category contain some of the finest rum and most potent rum all together, but can be pricey. As previously recommended though, the Smith and cross is a great and cheap way to find out if your into this kinda "overly" aromatic rum

La Flibuste by La Favourite. I'm not as experienced as many others on here, but I have tasted nothing quite like La Flibuste before or since. I have two bottles, one which has been open for almost 5 months, the other locked-away because it will be a while before I can go back to Martinique to buy some more :-( I allow myself a little taste every couple of weeks, and it still 'wow's me.

For me it was St.Nicholas Abbey 12 yr Rum. Actually I was so taken by this โ€œpureโ€ rum that Rum became my drink of choice. I have since tried in excess of 100 rums but have not come close to match this one. I can only imagine how the older (15, 18 & 20 yr) versions would taste like.
