If you want less sweet and smooth sipping try: Flor de Cana 18 The Real McCoy 12 Brugal 1888 All excellent and priced similarly, at least here in the U.S.

Being in the UK, your answer might well lie at Marks and Spencers If you want something sweet, very easy to drink and cheap, get yourself their Bajan Estate XO for (currently on offer) £22. It's a bit of a whore, as it has sugar added to it. I drank a lot of it at one stage as it was so easy to drink. It was a phase I went through, but then I found the sweetness was something I wasn't looking for - but as value goes, it was good, and for ease of drinking it was dangerous! They also do a Plantation Gran Anejo for £25 (a blend of Guatemala and Belize partially aged in Cognac) which will be less sweet but good value. They also do a Guyana 10yo also for £25 that has been aged in American oak that might be worth a try. (I might try and pick a bottle up). So three rums for £25 or less that should probably hit your mark. They also seem to have a 14yo Jamaican for £30 but not sure that that would hit your brief. NB M&S have different prices in some of their stores (seemingly most of them) and those quoted are from their www and apply to big food shops. You may find yourself being charged £3 or so more a bottle.

I'm also in the UK, Scotland to be precise. I've just finished off another bottle of Diplimatico reserva and a bottle of reserva exclusiva, I don't usually get to the bottom of a bottle as i'm a bit of a collector. My last 3 purchases (all from Drinkmonger) have been Kirk & Sweeney 23yr, Plantation Stiggins Fancy Pineapple, FourSquare Zinfandel Cask Blend. The Plantation is something a bit different, a bit of a novelty and at £35 i'd recommend it if you collect otherwise it's probably a bit of a waste. The Kirk & Sweeney is fantastic, I paid £44.99 for it which seems to be on the cheap side. The bottle, story etc is great and the rum is up there in my top 10. The FourSqaure is a real treat also, it was £39.99 and is smooth, not overly sweet and leaves a beautiful creamy toffee taste on the palate.

John, you will want to stick with semi-dry or mildly sweet rums with between 10 to 25 grams per liter of added sugar. My own price limit has been $50 US and good sipping rums can be found for around $32-$40 US. Examples of these are: Plantation Artisinal 3-Stars El Dorado 5 Angostura 1919 El Dorado 8 English Harbour 5 Pampero Aniversario Don Pancho Origenes 8 Ron Barcelo Imperial Many of the other ones recommended here are mostly dry with no added sugar, but they do pick up sweetness from the oak barrels. Dictador rums from Columbia are excellent examples of somewhat sweet rums with very little or no added sugar because they are aged in oak barrels that had been used to age aguardiente. Dictador XO Insolent is the only one that I splurged $100 US on and it was worth every penny.
