I would not presume that Ed Hamilton would lie, as he is a rather well known character in the rum world, and it would be foolish to tarnish one's name which has become a brand by such a stupid lie (especially when anyone can open the bottle and test the rum). However - sometimes, the bottler can state that he added no sugar and it may be true, but the rum may be sourced from producers that traditionally sweeten their rums, and Demerara rums are traditionally sweetened. So it may be that Mr. Hamilton sourced already sweetened rum, added nothing as he states on the label, blended and bottled it. It certainly happened in case of Pusser's rum - they also proclaim they do not sweeten it, yet the hydrometer test proved sugar was added.
