Doorlys 12 yr old. Simply Bajan . No need to add more. Bajan Estate XO, still the best β€œ supermarket β€œ rum I have found. But if anyone can recommend a better one? ( by supermarket I mean not from a recognised distillery ). Enjoy, graham.

Caroni 19 year old, no longer produced as every single distillery in Trinidad and Tobago is no longer with the exception of Angostura!

I got a tasting set of 7 rums, mostly the really popular stuff like Diplomatico and El Dorados, I used it to refresh my memory and write reviews for each.

My Daughter flew in from London with a bottle of Cuban Havana Club. Being in the USA, that is a special treat.

Kirk & Sweeney 23 yr- It's far better than the 12 year I previously tasted IMO with sweet fruit, oak, and a blast of vanilla. Compared to the younger version I can now differentiate which flavors come from aging and which are the spirit itself. In this case the spirit has a distinct tropical dew element in the finish, I have tasted this in a few other rums like: Brugal Anejo, K&S12, Trigo Reserva AΓ±eja(PR) Seems Agricole like but I can't say for sure bc I've only ever had Barbancourt which isn't said to be typical of that style. Overall this is interestingly different from my typical go to Bajans, and while I didn't like the 12 yr version bc it was too bitter, the 23 yr version has more sweetness and Is helping me to learn to appreciate other natural style rums beyond What of m used to.

Friend got me Dark Matter. I'm not keen on it but still waiting to see if it grows on me, doubt it will. It's the same mouth feel you get after drinking ginger beer, which I don't like. It's very heavy on the cloves and I don't get much else from it, so I find it quite one dimensional, whereas Rumbullion had a kaleidoscope effect. 5/10

I find Dark Matter to be mainly aniseed and ginger. Anything else is further back. I quite like it but Rumbullion and Chairman's Reserve are also good Elements 8, St Abbs and Rebellion are very different but also good....more citrus.

My son brought me a bottle of presidente marti 23 solera. Since the 19 year solera is one of my favorites, I have to say that this one is better (not always the case). More smooth, spicy and a little less sweet, just a perfect rum imo. By the way snookerman,, that plantation barbados 2001 was a good experience for me. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!! Cheers

I was wondering what to get next, I might try that Marti 23. The 19 was very nice but the way you describe the 23 makes it sound better Marco. After trying quite a few rums now I'm starting to prefer the ones with less sugar.

I've been reading reviews and I get the impression Diplomatico RE is better and cheaper. Is it sweeter, just as sweet or less sweet than DRE? After my third bottle of DRE which I first thought was heaven I was finding the sweetness a bit too heavy. There is 42g per litre of added suger, 8 sugar cubes? which is one of the highest of all rums. Ron Zacapa has 23g while Mount Gay XO, Appleton 12 and Seale's 10 have zero. Here look, I just found that Marti 23 has more sugar than DRE, 47g per litre http://rumproject.com/rumforum/viewtopic.php?t=1683 I think I'll give it a miss, especially at Β£58, with DRE being Β£40

Everyone has his own preferences tastewise i guess. I'm a bit of a sweet tooth indeed. Read my review about that plantation bottle you have. I think you will like it. Reading the reviews will prevent you from buying rums you'll regret. Worked for me! Cheers!

When I first started drinking the better rums, I think like most people I preferred the sweeter ones. DRE, El Dorado 12, Marti 19, Ron Millonario 15 It's only through doing the homework and reading reviews that you learn more, then discover other kinds. The drier ones I mentioned with zero sugar at first I didn't like as mush as the sweeter, but that's now changed. I was told when I first joined this site that my palate would mature over time so I guess that's what's happened. It took a bit of time but I found there's more to appreciate in the ones that don't need added sugar to become what they are. I agree with the likes of Capn Jimbo who call it cheating. There's a place for sweet rums, but I don't really see the point in saying you've aged a rum for 23 years if you've added 47grams of sugar to the bottle. It's true that drink is a liqueur and not a rum. Took me a while to understand that. So I' just going to re order Mount Gay XO, Seale's 10, Appleton 12, and for a new one try Santa Teresa 1796.

Good choises. I tried mount gay xo and santa theresa as well and liked them alltough they are less sweet! So maybe in the future I will loose the sweet tooth ha ha. Still want to try RL Seale wich get's excellent reviews on RR. Anyway, just enjoy your rums to the fullest, so will I! Cheers

Marco if you like Mount Gay XO you'll be happy with R.L.Seale's 10. I would say it's better than MGXO.
