I've looked through every page of topics and nothing on spiced rum so thought we better have one.
I used to like Captain Morgan's spiced with coke in my early rum days.
Since then I've gone on to discover Rumbullion and Rebellion spiced. Rumbullion is a crazy drink, so much going on and the bottle didn't last long. I'd like to hear from anyone who's tried the XO spiced, as I'm considering buying a sample bottle.
Rebellion spiced is probably the best pound for pound rum you could buy imo. I doubt you can find anything better anywhere at that price.
I'm thinking about trying Dark Matter next, and Matugga spiced sounds interesting.
I've had Morant Bay recommended on here before but still not tried it. Any others you'd suggest?

The most intense spiced rum I have had is easily The Lash. Lots of clove and pie spices.
Probably the best tasting, most drinkable on it's own is Chairman's Reserve. Brinley's Shipwreck gold is also very good. Siesta Key is like Christmas in a glass.
I have heard outstanding things about Old New Orlean's Cajun Spiced but have not wanted to shell out the $40ish to get a bottle.
Thanks for those Scott, haven't heard of any of them! I'll have a look :)
I like this review on the Lash!
From Holland, strong, distinctive, flowery but agreeable after taste. Good stuff, conversation piece named after Churchill's quote: "Don't talk to me about naval tradition. It's nothing but rum, sodomy, and the lash." Tailor made for fetichists!
Brinley's Shipwreck is around £20, I'll have to see how that compares to Rebellion.
Definitely, The Lash, Brinley’s but also Foursquare Spiced and Bayou Spiced. There are so many nice spiced rums out there that are leaps and bounds above Captain Morgan!
Chairman's Reserve is VERY powerfully spiced. It's a bit too sweet for me. I like it but it's very occasional and Christmassy. Rumbullion is similar with more orange and less spice and slightly less sweet.
Rebellion is great to drink neat, on the rocks or with lemonade. Best cheapish spiced. O Hara's is similar but weaker tasting and more vanilla and limey. Pink Pigeon is a bit perfumey and a bit rough on kick. Tikamaka is rough and not very nice. St Aubin vanilla is lovely as are the Canarian honey rums and Plantation Pineapple but these are flavoured not spiced. The Plantation is 95% like good rum with just a hint of pineapple.
Red Leg is good and gingery and fiery. Rolling Calf and Admiral J are very vanilla with a hunt of lime. You will either love them or hate them.
Hi Snookerman, very interessted in your Chairman's comments as it's on my shopping list for xmas. I've had Rumbullion before and it was different to anything I'd had before. I'll buy again one day but after exploring a few others.
I'm actually having a break from Rebellion because I don't want to wear it out! Best rum you can buy at that price imo.
I saw Pink Pigeon in Aldi, not sure about it, apparently it's drowned in vanilla.
Red Leg is an ok one from Tesco, wouldn't buy again though when I could get Rebellion.
At the moment I'm actually having a break from rum altogether and am drinking some bourbon. Hadn't had JD in ages so I bought a bottle, but regretted it after, should have bought Jameson. But after that I tried one I knew nothing about, Buffalo Trace. Don't want to sound like an alci because I really don't have a problem, but I'm on my third bottle this week! Lovely stuff, leaves a buttery aftertaste with coke zero.
My shopping list for this xmas, 2 bourbons and two spiced rums.
Chairman's Reserve spiced.
I prefer Bourbon to Whisky but I'm not keen on either. Try Mount Gay Black Barrel. It's the most like that of rums that I've tried and many others say the same. It's really good.
Spiced rum is such an individual thing. Probably half the rum aficionados hate nearly all of it and those who like it vary in their likes.
I love Dark Matter. Many hate it. I can't see why. It's very smooth and half the comments about it seem way boff to me. It's aniseed tasting.
Lidl's Liberte is a little like Kraken. It's got less kick and is sweeter. It's got more liquorice and less vanilla.
Rolling Calf at Bargain Booze is very smooth indeed (about 14 quid) and easy to knock back with friends but it really tastes strongly of vanilla (probably chemical) and a dash of lime. I like it but I would say many would hate it. Like I say, one man's spice is another man's...
Bought Pink Pigeon spiced today. What a waste of £20. Rebellion same price and 10 times better.
Artificial, burns, maybe some hint of nail varnish.
Will drown it in coke zero until it's gone.
Yep, Pink Pigeon is not as good as Rolling Calf. I'd say that it's got more spice than Sailor Jerry, but is not actually as pleasant.
I've heard good things about Bayou Spiced and St Abbs Spiced. Maybe Dead Man's Fingers too.
Anyone tried any of those and if they have how is the taste compared to Rebellion and any other spiced you can name?
My favorit is Cortez spiced (Panama) and Beach House spiced (Mauritius) .
I've now tried Elements 8 and it is really, really good. I'd put it about level with Rebellion - it is a better constructed rum than Rebellion with a better base, but the flavours in the spice are about equally enjoyable - Rebellion is sweeter. Rebellion is also about £12 a bottle cheaper.
Having bought a bottle of Pink Pigeon and it not being to my taste, I thought I'd experiment with it and turn it into a spiced rum I may prefer. Ideally, I'd do this with an average base rum, but I like all my pure rums, so the Pigeon gets the bird here :)
I have 2/3 of a bottle left and have poured a bit of the original in a small container to compare later. Since this has plenty of vanilla already, I've added - orange peel (half an orange), a teaspoon of lime juice, 3 cardamon seeds, 1 star anise, a cinnamon stick, 4 pepper corns. I'll let you know how it goes after 4/5 days!
If it's not great, I'll add some ginger, clove and nutmeg next up.
It tastes great! (see post above).
I know Dave Broom suggests making your own spiced rum rather than buying it and having done it myself, I'd encourage others to try it. I ended up leaving it for 2 and a half days and I'd say that was about right. I wouldn't necessarily change anything except maybe I'd try adding a few other things in addition next time - cloves, nutmeg and lemon, maybe.
I taste tested it on my wife and her friend and they both loved it and wanted more, so there you go - easy to do and you can create your own mix with your own preferred base rum!!
Nathan i would get a bottle of Cloven Hoof Spiced. By far one of the most unusual spiced rums iv had. Smells a bit like those old fashioned cough sweets or cough medicine, but the taste is unreal!
Also give Chairmans Reserve Spiced a go. Tastes like Christmas cake!
