Having read several times about "Caribbean tastes" in the past, I thought I would kill 2 birds with 1 stone. I bought a coconut, intending too eat the flesh and, as I've read, use the coconut milk as a mixer. Bad mistake, I put the milk with Havana club 7 yr old, it completely " killed the rum". No nose, no flavour, urghhhh! Never again. One mistake I will not be making again, be warned. Graham.

Hmmm... how was the coconut water by itself before mixing? I really like that as a mixer but I usually buy the branded kind "Vita Coco" and don't get it from an actual coconut. I know from experience that it's popular in Puerto Rico and they'll add booze right into a fresh coconut that has the top chopped off with a machete. Funny thing is most people there praise Johnny Walker Black Label as the greatest spirit when they have access to such great Don Q rums right at there finger tips. However to each his own bc it is essentially watering down your rum with a semi sweet natural water. What do you prefer to mix with? Ginger Ale and lime wedge is my go-to. Cheers!

Your misadventure reminds me of this incident… A few years ago, my wife ordered a Bloody Mary in Punta Cana. After some time, the very dedicated server came back with a drink resembling a ‘Green Mary’. He didn’t have any tomato juice, so he blended fresh green tomatoes! Even if it was undrinkable, he got a nice tip for creativity and effort :) According to several Caribbean gardeners/beach salesmen, drinking the milk from the freshly harvested coconut gives ‘muy potencia sexual’. It might be worth losing some of the nose and flavors ;)

Hi Bob, the coconut milk by itself was fine. I used to eat/drink coconut regularly. It certainly won't be going in with any rum in the future. I've had the top lopped off and filled with all sorts on various Caribbean hols, it's normally cheap stuff from a beach bar, the rum that is. If I mix I normally stick to coke, but recently tried ginger ale, over ice, but I cannot make up my mind, probably too stuck in my ways/tastes. I may have to retry with a lime wedge. Do you think the Black Label is because it's "something different " than what is readily available? One of my work colleagues is originally from Grenada, and only drinks Scotch, won't consider rum at all. Tequilalex, that sounds like a truly awful mix. Cheers graham.

Try again, but add some citrus and sugar. The results will be much better.

Hi Martin, I've just made another"mistake" by pressing the report flag whilst reading your post. Take no notice it was a mistake. I've completely given up on the coconut water in rum, As you say, bloody awful. Cheers Graham

Hi Graham, my wife brought me some coconut water, so I tried also to mix it with rum, with the advice from Alan to add some citrus and sugar. The result, how can I say, nothing overwhelming. So, I think I stay with Pina Colada if I want the "Caribbean tastes". If you like to try something different then Coke, so try white rum with Sprite/7up, it calls Santo Libre from the Dominican Republic. By the way, I saw you have a bottle Kraken on your shelf, for the cold winter days, mix it with hot apple juice, it’s for all who don’t like mulled wine.

Hi Rene, thanks for the tip bit I don't really drink white rum. As for the Kraken, I bought it to see what all the reviews were about. Sorry but not for me. It's a one off purchase I'm afraid. Cheers Graham

You have to be careful when adding rum to coconut milk or other mixers! Havana Club 7 is a very good rum, however, it is not a overpowering rum. Because of this, that is why you found the milk didn’t play out favorably when mixed with the Havana Club. You might want to try a darker and a less delicate rum like a Jamaican or Bajan rum to mix with the coconut milk for better results.
