So, I am just looking around for a bottle of rum that doesn't kill the pocket but thinking of crossing something off the to-do list. The ones that are hitting the list right now are - Pussers bluelabel or gunpowder - El Dorado 5 or 8 year, (many say the 8 year is much better) I think I have tried Pussers but can't really recall... (fun times) but from what people say, it is likely going to be right up my street. Are there any others to consider in this range?

I think Zaya is under £35 in some places and decent. El Dorado always a good choice, probably the 8 is in that price range as well.

I think the bet available under £20 is Rebellion spiced, better than El Dorado 8 by a long way. The best El Dorado is the 12. For the difference in price I don't see any point buying the 8. On the other end of the scale you can get two bottles of the 12 instead of the 21. I don't know what the 15 is trying to be. Stick to the 12. Mount Gay XO is around £35 as is Appleton 12. I love how clear the Appleton 12 is. Compare it to Diplomatico RE and see the difference. 42grams of sugar adds to the decrease in visibility. Imagine Scuba diving through Appleton and then Diplomatico. Cleaner waters in Jamaica!

I ended up buying a bottle of Cana Negra Guatemalan Rum from Marks and Spencers after tasting it at my friends place, surprisingly awesome.

Agree with nathan rebellion is the best spiced around in my opinion delightful, two must haves in any collection is a rum punch legendario is amazing value for money and Diplomatico RE.If you enjoy exploring different flavours added don papa small batch is an interesting orange scented one, for rum liquor flavours sant Teresa orange liqor or new grove café although I dread to read about these 3 on added sugar content as I expect it to be huge. For people who understand the added sugar content in rums then Brugal extra vierjo is my good honest rum or mount gay black barrel I have developed a taste for as quite a few bars stock this as a standard rum now …

Not tried rumbellion yet, saw it in Morrisons recently and will get some next time. Don Papa is also on my to try list also. I try to avoid rum liquors unless I am planning on messing around making cocktails, would rather others buy them for me to taste. Actually I have tried legendario previously, I haven't added it on my list yet as I forgot about it. I don't recall being overly impressed as I found it rather sickly to drink straight, but I liked the flavour generally. Legendario along with various honey rums are commonly picked up from those visiting spain/spanish isles, and it seems that the Spanish homeland tends to prefer their drinks overloaded with sugar. I enjoy Diplomatico RE, but its pricing for me puts it in a situation where there are alternatives that I simply prefer more. In regards to added sugar, I generally don't mind a bit of added sweetness from caramel or molasses, but this Cana Negra Gran Reserva (which seems to be a plantation rum?) is shockingly well balanced, one of the best rums I have tried recently.

Thanks for the correction!11 Actually I recall wanting to try the rebellion dark rum, it is certainly a line I would like to try. I will be going to the rum fest in a few days time so hopefully get to cross off a few things off of the list. Actually I just remembered Legendario, I recall it tasting like liquid raisin. I think I would need to try it again for a fair review, but I now recall liking it a lot but found it rather sickly.

At that price, I like Flor de Cana Gran Reserve 7 year or Appleton 8 year. Also, for a pleasant spiced rum, Brinley's Shipwreck gold. Brinley might be more available in the US than Europe.

Ron Botran 1893 Solera Rum would be my choice for right at $35. Dictador 12 is another fine rum at that price. The Real McCoy 12 is a fine no sugar or color added rum at that price point. Kirk & Sweeney 18 is great but you better love caramel and vanilla. and lastly the Dictador 100 month series of rums I really enjoy very much. cheers!
