I've never tried rhum agricole. The molasses based rums I have are the appleton 12, el dorado 12, zacapa 23. I understand that agricoles don't have added sugar, so they are dryer. What would you suggest for sipping neat (aged rhum)?

Indeed the agricoles rums have not added sugar but it isn’t the only difference. Agricoles rums are made from sugarcane juice and not from molasses. The manufacture is therefore different from molasses based rums, which gives two different styles. We can summarize by saying that the English/Spanish rums have “usually” spicy aroma while old agricoles rums have woody aroma (stronger, which can give this illusion of being driest rums). I said “summarize” because each rum has its unique flavor and has no equivalent. we cannot, of course, restrict the world of rum with two aromas. Some can have floral flavor, some fruity flavor... the possibility are endless. Aniway, what i’m trying to say is that is difficult to suggest you argicoles rums because they’re very different from the others. You’ll probably won’t like this kind if you love sweet rums (added sugar or not). But if you like dry rums like appleton or mount gay (or whiskey), you could try very aged agricoles rums to start (8 years or more). you won’t have this strong and harsh taste that younger rums can have. I tried rums from CLEMENT, BIELLE, DARBOUSSIER, REIMONEQ, NEISSON, you’re free to take a look at my ratings to see my reviews. Let us know when you’ve tried one.

I'd add Barbancourt as well, although the 15yo is a bit woody for me and I almost prefer the 5 Star (8yo) - maybe that is because it is much cheaper. I've always preferred molasses but am enjoying a bottle of 7yo Dillon XO at the moment, Cheap, and if I am honest it tastes a little cheap, but definitely piqued my interest. And if you want a very extreme one, Arcane Extraroma from Mauritius is fascinating. They do a less powerful one which is more typical of an Agricole.
