Barcelo Imperial rum is produced in the Dominican Republic using column stills before aged in white oak casks for up to 10 years.
Ron Barcelo was founded in 1929 by Spanish entrepreneur Julian Barcelo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The brand was sold mainly in the Caribbean and North America until a much broader international expansion began in 1992.

Great rum for cuba libre, slightly sweet which makes a great mixer.
Smooth, gets better after the first taste. Always have a bottle of this to have it ready when friends come over
Pretty looking bottle, especially the huge 1.75L one. Nice darker colour, the rum is a little boring at first - not much happening. Then the taste comes in. Nice hints of wood and leather. If the taste was a little stronger from the get-go and also in general, this could be an 8. Maybe it could also use a little more voltage - it just seems too smooth for its own good. Still great especially given the price.
Good Qpr and sippin' rum, but a bit closed on the nose and not that aromatic (it opens up after 20-30 min in the glass).
Nice brown/orange color, not too heavy and bodied but also, not to light or thin bodied.
Otherwise decent alcohol and not over-burning on the throat. Fair rum.
English version after the French one...
I first drank that rhum at punta cana, i was on vacation. The packaging is very well made ! Fine details... the bottle is beautiful also ! The noze smells cacao and may be some caramel and a little vanilla ! My wife says Cinnamon :)
The barcelo imperial is easy to drink, not overly sweet, not rough neither, warms the chest, with a long final in the mouth ! I prefer to drink it straight. The texture of the liquor in the mouth is rounder ! I drink this rhum while having a glass of El Passador de Oro XO, in order to compare. I can tell without any doubt that the Barcelo Imperial has much more character than the Passador de Oro Xo. I will buy it again and again !
The smell is quite easy on the nose. A bit spicy and some vanilla. The taste is quite neutral. No real complexity but burn of alcohol while drinking, no real sweetness, which is nice if you are looking to get away from the diplomaticos or the zacapas. No real afterburn, its actually a quite smooth rum. When you make up the balance, you get a nice rum for a nice price. Good to serve to a thirsty crowd, without worrying that your top of the line rum will go wasted on guests that cant appreciate it to the fullest.
De tweede van de avond. Milder dan de El Dorado. Maar daardoor wat vlakjes
Good for walking over forests with friends and backpacks
Got this rum on Curasao for 23$. What a bargain, exceptional good for this price.
It's rich in taste and spicy (not harsh).
You should give this rum some time to breath, 10-20min would be fine, because at the beginning there is a alcohol note in the smell.
I love the oil, it's warm and fills your mouth with flavours.
The finish is warm and spicy, some light sweetness remains on the palet. This rum is very very good.
Smell: oak, caramel, some molasses, dry fruits (plum, raisins), mandarine, toasted barrel
Taste: caramel, burned suggar, rum raisins, mandarine, vanilla, spice, oak, some bitterness (not much)

"ends with a carrot cake ice cream taste"

The nose is light and gentle.
"It’s quite nicely balanced but just a little bit too nice."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

A good rum but....

This is a unique rum experience and should be tried.
That said, the rum smells and finishes like perfume! I prefer the cheaper and tastier Barcelo Grand Anjeo to the Imperial. This one surprised me, in a bad way...
I'm thinking it must be the barrels they are using for this label. The oak flavor was odd, it was over oaked providing a burnt tobacco flavor. The whole rum was way off, dry, and unbalanced. The only saving grace is that I could taste a quality aged rum wanting to come out. It was just overpowered by a strange oakey flavor and overly pungent botanicals. For my second try I used a glass of Coke to help calm it down a bit but that lingering perfume aroma would not go away and that strange oak flavor prevailed.
The rum is not worth the price but its something a rum drinker should try. Maybe your experience will be different but I think Barcelo took what could have been a great rum and messed it up terribly.
It's also a nasty hangover. That smell is still in my nose and I feel awful right now!
