When I finally get the urge to crack this baby open, I will update this rating.
Very surprised by the low ratings, this rum is great - butterscotch sweetness but with a gentle burn. Smells, tastes even better.
So, so, so smooth. The alcohol is barely tangible on the nose or tongue. The color is light amber with a hint of reds.
The Dominicans scored big with this one! I can't believe all the poor or so-so ratings. This rum is fantastic. It's good iced cold and it also makes a punchy rum and coke. This should serve as the standard for "Anejo" rums! It is very balanced, starts with a nice rum bite, finishes smooth with a very subtle sweetness, and is not over oaked. The aroma lingers in the nose and the pallet for a while maintaining a vanilla and nutty finish. Molasses, fruit, and sugar are not the centerpiece of this Anejo. This is a "hotter" more punchy aged rum.
Where dark rums are concerned, this one has a complex, almost fruity forefront. Hefty notes of apple and apricot adorn the palate, quickly followed with a dense, oaky finish. Defninitely an interesting addition to any collection.
Introduced to sipping rum with this one, very smooth, great on the rocks, hard to find in the states, well WNY anyway
A surprising bargain for a simple sipping rum. No burn.
If you look at price / performance.
This is a very fine tasty rum.
Absolutely men's character. Classic oak testy. Best for price/quality
My local shop has this priced at $15, which is great for the value. It's an excellent blend of Dominican rum and it's light brown color matches its smooth taste. Great alone or with mixer. Would buy it if it was $20 or $25 but not higher.
I've been looking for years for something that tastes like that! It has this really nice odor and the tastes I just can't compare. I am drinking it 100% clean, but I am yet to try this with cola.
I don't understand the low numbers this rum received. This Dominican rum is not overly sweet although there are some sweetness in the finish. Some vanilla flavor and no harsh burn...quite smooth. Nothing extraordinary about it otherwise I'd have given it a 9. Would make for a decent sipping rum if nothing better is available. Works great in mixed drinks and colas. Extremely versatile rum.
This rum is good. Even neat it has a lot of flavour, though i recomend it with cola.
This rum is maybe not the most exceptional rum I have tasted but it is still a nice one and for that price it is for me a good value for money. Smooth and well balanced from the beginning till the end, this rum presents some aromas like coffee, toffee and vanilla. It will be great in your favorite cocktails.
Like most Dominican Rums this one is also very smooth and easy to drink. But if the price difference to the Barcelo Imperial is not very large, what is normally not the case, you should go for the Imperial, if you are in need for a sipper. The Gran Anejo should be a little below 20€, while the Imperial is normally a little over 20€.
Rather low in price, but pretty high in quality! Great rum, works well in mixed drinks and with cola, but is also great with just ice. If I have to think something negative, I'd say the smell isn't as delicious as it could be, the smell of alcohol is quite sharp. Also the first sips might not be as good as in some other rums, because of this sharp aroma of alcohol. But still, I'd recommend this rum!
Smooth sipping, drinkeble, for mixes, etc. Good aged allround rum. Very nice!!!
I think this rum should be more appreciated, especially if you like rums that holds back on overt sweetness in favour of more fruity, herbal or nutty flavours. I especially appreciate its nutty and herbal qualitites, letting the sweetness take a back seat to this nice mix of tastes. Sure, it is not an extraordinary product, but very well made and price worthy given its qualities.
