This is the 3rd rum in the Panama Pacific line that I have tried alongside the 9 Year and the 15 Year. Thus far the Panama Pacific rums, sourced from the former Cuban Director of Research and Development overseeing the rum industry, Don Pancho Fernandez, have ranged from solid to really quite good. His distillery in Las Cabras, Herrera Province, Panama has produced some notable rums including the Selvarey line, the Grander line, the Zafra line, his own Don Pancho line, and the Panama Pacific line (among others). Most of his rums are in the original Cuban style utilizing the Cuban producing methods he brought with him from Cuba.

According to Panama Pacific this rum is made from locally grown sugar cane molasses and fermented with a yeast deriving from pineapple before being distilled on a copper column still and then tropically aged for 3 Years in spent bourbon and whiskey barrels. This rum is then filtered and bottled at 40% ABV.

Given that I have mostly enjoyed the Panama Pacific line, when I saw this rum hit the market I set out to get some. It took a while to make it to my region, but it’s here now so I quickly snagged a bottle. It comes in handy 1L bottles (like Neisson). I am hoping this compares favorably to Selvarey White given my enjoyment of that rum but disappointed in its recent price hike.

I am surprised to find that the nose is more complex than Selvarey White and than I had anticipated for a 3 Year aged filtered column style rum. Taking a whiff from the Glencairn I get Key Lime Pie, Toasted Marshmallows, and Limoncello. So far identical to Selvarey White, which would make sense. But then I also get a strong White Chocolate note that is not present in Selvarey. 4 nose notes on a 3 year aged Cuban style column distilled rum? I can dig that. Especially these notes.

The palate is just slightly more muted than the nose but still very enjoyable. I get a mouthful of Toasted Marshmallow, Lemon Merengue, and raw unrefined sugar. The combination is very synchronous and is quite an enjoyable sip all by itself - even though I got this for mixing. Not bad at all.

The finish is short but comprises Merengue and a faint Key Lime Pie note.

This is surprisingly good. The oscillation between Key Lime Pie and Lemon Merengue is interesting as is the White Chocolate note on the nose. To my slight surprise, like Selvarey White, this rum is quite enjoyable all on its own. It is definitely one of the best young aged Cuban style rums I have enjoyed. In fact, I think enjoy this more than some of the longer aged versions of this rum in the same line. It’s definitely better than the Panama Pacific 9 Year, and maybe even slightly better than the 15 Year. It also answers another question I have had about the distillery at Las Cabras: what does the underlying short aged distillate taste like? This is the youngest Don Pancho distillate I have had, and it is really quite good. The man knows what he is doing and if you are an American looking for a true Cuban style light rum, it’s hard to do better than this. This is excellent.

Given I can get this rum at 1L for the same price as a 750ml bottle of Selvarey White, I think I will opt for this one. They are both excellent but this one is now a better value given Sevarey’s recent price hike. I have heard someone write about this being an even stand in for the old Caña Brava 3 Year. Oh yeah I can take that, and it makes perfect sense.

Oh it it makes the best Mojito I have ever had. Just flawless. Well damn, I was not expecting this rum to be this good.

I was very hesitant to try this rum after having had rotten luck with their 9 year old rum. So was this white rum at the start of their whole process to blame or was it their aging methods? Evidently, their aging methods are to be blamed because it is extremely rare for a distiller's white rum to be better than their aged rum, which is the case here! Go figure! I rate this one slightly above average for white rums. Since Cana Brava 3 Year is no longer available, this should satisfy as a substitute, but not quite.

A 5.5 on my scale. Sweeter than I would have thought for a light rum and not much of an after burn. Panama-Pacific does not disappoint. Not the best straight, but a new go to for mixing.
