Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year rum

Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year

Haiti | Aged

Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year Rum is agricultural, meaning it's produced from fermented sugar cane juice rather than the more typical molasses. The sugar cane juice is double distilled and aged for eight years in Limousin oak barrels.

Dupré Barbancourt created the Barbancourt rum recipe in 1862 in Haiti, where the rum is still produced today. A French national, Barbancourt incorporated traditional French methods including double-distillation in the process.

A bit too harsh on the aftertaste ..... Nice to sip but wouldn't purchase if I had the choice ... It's like a mix between spiced and aged that doesn't quite work

This is a decent agricole rum but I definitely wanted more. It's reasonably smooth (little burn,) moderately priced and decently flavored (although it does have a bite to it.) Not a bad rum (in fact, it's pretty good,) but considering its aging and prestige, I was definitely hoping for better. Still, it's worth a try!

The best tasting rum for the price 1000000%. 8 year aged rum for $31 bucks in CA. Sugar cane so it's extra sweet.

I bought this as a lark not expecting a whole lot and was shocked at just how good it was. The nose isn't much...a little bit of oak with just a hint of sugar cane in the background. The taste is smooth and mellow with a fair amount of heat. I taste the sugars and caramel and even a hint of banana. It is a very unique flavor of rum which I really enjoy at a very reasonable price. Add just two or three drops of water and it mellows even more nicely.

It is one of the better cane juice type rums I have tasted because it has lost the strongest of the grassy flavors, which I am not a fan of. Having said that, I am doubtful that they age all of the Rhums involved in this bottling for 8 years. The nose is astringent and the taste has some mellower characteristics but not enough to compensate.

It's pretty dry, I have to dig deep to find the flavors. Nice burn and finish. If you're used to real smooth suppers this isn't it, but I'm used to bourbons so it's fine.
Edit: the more I sip it, the better it gets. Subtle but good, simple toasted vanilla. It's still not as good as other rums in this price range. I guess I'm not a fan of Agricoles.

Going from memory here, but I remember this being a decent rum for the price. Definitely nothing to write home about.

Probably not my ‘cup’ of rum.
Quite a strong smell of alcohol when you pour the glass so better to let it breath for 5 minutes. It rounds up afterwards but still strong alcohol wise. Some hints of vanilla and maybe a coffee but everything is overpowered by alcohol. Definitely better with a drop of water or on the rocks.

Interesting experience but will not buy another bottle.

My rating is less on the rum and more on the style I think. Vegetal and funky, I think I just need more experience with this style of rum before I will like it.

Nothing too objectionable, but nothing memorable either. Not bad for the price but I would probably use it as a mixer, not as a sipper.
