Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year Rum is agricultural, meaning it's produced from fermented sugar cane juice rather than the more typical molasses. The sugar cane juice is double distilled and aged for eight years in Limousin oak barrels.
Dupré Barbancourt created the Barbancourt rum recipe in 1862 in Haiti, where the rum is still produced today. A French national, Barbancourt incorporated traditional French methods including double-distillation in the process.

Best I can say is this one is OK. Nothing special, for the money it's OK, but it just doesn't have any one specific spice or flavor that makes it more than just an average rum. I'm used to trying hard to pick out the subtle flavors in a good rum but there just wasn't a definitive flavor.
I wis I could say more about it, but for a one-word descriptor I would have to go with:
MEHHH.
A little hotter than some Agricole but nice aroma, and taste. You can smell the brown sugar, the field, and oak. Get yourself a bottle.
Tastes very mild but it has all of the good things there.. slight whisky, vanilla, oak.
Slight sweetness. Not so much
Super smooth
Na nose dřevo, lehce karamel, vodka, trocha ovoce. Pořád celkem ploché, ale pořád příjemně čisté a šťavnaté. V chuti dominuje karamel. Dochuť krátka. I přes tu plochost mě na tom něco babí.
Tasted at Laka Lono 8/19/21
Notes indicate that this had a sweet taste and that our discussion was mostly around the confusing naming system for these rums, involving both years and stars
UPDATE: Also entered in my passport on 1/31/22 with notes that this was a little more agricole in flavor than I prefer. Interestingly, I did give it the same rating as the first time.
I'm not always into Agricoles but this one was drinkable. Although hella affordable, I probably won't be getting this again for sipping- but would definitely not say no if someone offered it.
It was good I just can't put my finger on anything that WoW'ed me.
In cocktails, this does an OK job. Neat, however, this rhum does not have a pleasant nose and the first sip is pretty overwhelming with a medicinal/chemical taste. Second sip is not as bad, but still not great. Wouldn't buy again.
"palate is powerful, smooth, and well-balanced'"
"Barbancourt 5 Star rum review by the Ultimate Rum Guide"
Nose is surprisingly “molasses” like.
"Nice citrus notes, a little lime, a hint of lemon moving onto a more fruity green grapes."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This is a very good starting point in the carribean rum enlarged family. Barbancourt 8 is smooth, easy to drink, with very tipical notes from its 8 years aging in french white oak barrel. It's lacking originality in my opinion but it's a nice sippper.
