Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year Rum is agricultural, meaning it's produced from fermented sugar cane juice rather than the more typical molasses. The sugar cane juice is double distilled and aged for eight years in Limousin oak barrels.
Dupré Barbancourt created the Barbancourt rum recipe in 1862 in Haiti, where the rum is still produced today. A French national, Barbancourt incorporated traditional French methods including double-distillation in the process.

This is a interesting stuff, very fresh, vegetables, suave, almonds, nuts and herbal. Good aftertaste
I picked this one up when I was finding it difficult to find a true rhum agricole. I don't enjoy it neat, but I really enjoy it with a Mexican coke and another rum.
Definitely as dry as you'd expect from an agricole, but this isn't a good thing. Very light color, light taste. On the plus side, decently smooth and a nice vanilla finish. And it's eminently affordable.
Nice rum agricole. Tasty both straight up and in coke. Great value for money.
Edit: After the bottle being opened for a few weeks the rum began to have a wierd smell and taste to it. Ended up giving the bottle to a friend who mixes it with coke. Went down from a 7 to a 6 because of this.
I go back and forth between Barbancourt and Appleton VX. Barbancourt has a deeper level of oak and a similar smoothness on the finish, but I just can't bring myself to love it. It can be sipped, but for the all the fuss on the label, it isn't anything special. It seems a waste to dump it into a mixed drink, but perhaps for a Mai-Tai (which is what I prefer to use Appleton in) it would lend an element of toast and depth.
I was a bit disappointed by my first agricole. It really tastes a lot like a moderately sweetened molasses rum that, while fairly smooth, has little of a distinct character. The aftertaste is a little harsh and almost vodka-like (not very pleasant), and very little other than light floral and sugar on the nose. If it weren't so smooth, it wouldn't rate this high.
Decent Agricole Rhum but lacking in sophistication; definitely needs to be refined. Good enough, however , to use as a mixer or to cook with.
I found this has a distinct taste compared to D.R. Rums, must be something in the distillation or aging process. Still a fairly good drink when mixed, but not a lot of complex on its own.

Nose is surprisingly “molasses” like.
"Nice citrus notes, a little lime, a hint of lemon moving onto a more fruity green grapes."

This is one of my favorite mixers for a rum and coke with mexican coke. Biggest its a dryer rum it goes extremely well with the real sugar in mexican coke. It also has a nice complex flavor that comes with an aged rum. Good for the price
