Compass Distillers are located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They are a quality-oriented operation, from sourcing local ingredients for their various spirits, down to their beautiful bottle labels. Having tried and been very impressed with their gins, I was happy to try this rum. It’s young, and it shows. The nose is more whisky like, with almond, but also something resin-like or vegetal; it carries a prominent neutral alcohol smell. It’s missing the warmth of wood, spice, and tropical smells often associated with rum. On the palate is some sweetness and a faint butterscotch note, that carries off with some spice to a good length finish. What this rum lacks is time. I feel very confident that, over time, as the availability of increasingly older spirit makes its way into the blend, the profile will improve. This is a quality driven distillery and I have no doubts that they will achieve this. For now, I stand by my score. It would be fine as a mixer but not as a sipper. I look forward to future iterations to see how this rum progresses.
Compass Daily Ration Rum is produced by Compass Distillers in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. According to their website the origin of the name for this Rum derives from being the high point of a British soldier’s day stationed at the Halifax Citadel Hill Garrison in the 19th Century, which consisted of their daily ration of Rum. I sampled (and purchased a bottle of) this rum neat and was pleasantly surprised in spite of having only been aged for 1 year. This product is only available at the distillery itself in Halifax. This Rum (Batch # 1) is bottled at 40.7% ABV.
This Distillery has been in operation for less than 3 years and also produce other spirits including Vodka, Gin and Aquavit. Well done!
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Very light amber and very light on flavour. Leaves a slight bitterness. I expected more for the price.
