Funky Jamaican goodness with a strong ABV. This is the real deal. Great.

Rom fra Jamaica er bare noget andet end det jeg normalt er til. Ingen sukker tilsat gør at det bliver en anden smag, mangler sødmen. Men okay ift hvad jeg havde forventet.

Jeg har ikke den store erfaring med Jamaica-rom, men den overraskede mig positivt til en pris på 230 kr.

Coming into the rum world from Scotch, I haven't been wowed by much. But when I tried this rum based on an offhand recommendation I was blown away by the funk and complexity. This is what rum should be. It's got major banana notes to it, another fruit that I cannot discern, sweet but not overpowering molasses, and then I get a good amount of oak and earthiness to balance it out. Based on taste alone, I can't figure out how it's so low-priced - this rum punches way above its class. For it's category of British-style pot still rum, it's a 10/10.

I don't normally drink dark/ barrel-aged rum, but when I do... wow.

This is the one.

A friend surprised me with this at a dinner party. Not only am I nice and sauced up, but the rum was also the best-spiced variety I have ever tasted. I taste cherry and the nutty-oak flavor of the barrel, drinking it neat (as always, right out of the bottle) . Swish it around first and take small sips, this is stuff that will burn your insides, not so much your throat...and knock you on your ass, ration this one sailor. Probably would be awesome for Grog or Daquiris if ya drink that.

Although it is a product of London versus Jamaica it claims to be pure per Jamaican standards with no additives or colors. Ingredients are listed online : supposedly it's only, "Wedderburn and Plummer pot still distillates from wild yeast, molasses, skimmings, cane juice, syrup bottoms, and dunder from previous rum run, according its importer. Before blended, the rum is aged for less than a year to 3 years in white oak".

Had this one a few years ago, since it's extremely rare here in Czech, but I remember being fond of this funky strangeness. First of all, it was sweeter than I expected, together with the nose, it gave the impression of over-ripe banana mush. The impression was surprisingly light and fruity, but with a robust, funky finish.

This is the Jamaican rum tradition in a bottle, so I advise all ye young'uns to show some respect! Yarghh!

Tonight's Rum: Smith and Cross Traditional Rum Jamaica Rum, Navy Strength. Re-Reviewing I Rum I've had on my list for some time. It's a British import of Rum from Jamaica with a bit of UK tinkering. This rum does not start off well. It's bouquet is of caramel and glue. Not sure what kind of glue, or perhaps medicinal. The first hit on the palette is just that, a bold, fiery hit. This is due to it's 57% ABV (114 proof). Moments after there's a burn on the throat and not much in the way of a Rum taste. The high alcohol content is to blame. There's a bit of smoke and nuttiness bur not much more. I'm sad about this Rum which held such high promise as I brought it home from Las Vegas. The finish continues with it's medicinal flavor. 3 out of 10. Suitable for Rum and juice drinks only.

So I have been eyeing this one for a while, and after trying a Jamaican rum in a flight I knew I wanted something like that. And it delivers. The people calling it the Laphroaig of rums are right, and in more ways than one, as this rum has an almost smoky character to it. The rum is based on a neat serving, but I will definitely be trying it with a bit of water and in some fruity drinks.

EDIT: After trying it in a Caribou Lou (ghetto, I know) I have upgraded my rating from 7 to 8 - it provides a great contrast to the fruit.

I love this rum, while you could sip it, it is much better with a mixer or in a cocktail. This rum has character, it has funk and flavour in every drop. Taste wise, imagine inviting a Jamaican to a party, only he brings an entire regge band complete with bob marley and all his fans and the venue is in your mouth then you'll have some idea what this is like... this is a great rum and it should not be missed!
