Pure potstill rum from Jamaica. Love Jamaican rum and this one don't dissapoint you. Nose: classic jamaican scent of raisins and banana. Taste is harsh of raisins. Not sweet at all. For sailors or for those who prefer manly drinks.

First things first: anyone who thinks you can't sip this rum straight has obviously never tried barrel proof bourbons, cask strength scotches or irish whiskeys. You absolutely can and should try this rum neat. It's an absolute explosion of flavour; a true feast for the senses. Banana, vanilla, caramel, butterscotch, orange zest, leather, and tobacco. Smith & Cross also takes your tiki cocktails to the next level. Try it in a Mai Tai with some Appleton 12, and thank me later.

Before I tried this one I thought : hogo - ok, I think I know what you are talking about, this hogo is like praline, fruit sweetness'. This rum corrected my understanding of Jamaican funk.

Sipping: it is pretty weird and very unique, it smells like fried banana, many people say ripe, maybe, not for me. Anyway, definitely fruity in a weird way, I guess thats why it is called funk. Even though it is strong, it has plenty of flavour, and it is not harsh. Some people might not like it at all - it is like a different alcohol.

Mix: it is good, but not exceptional, there is too much fruity flavour, I like darker, more fruity rums for mixing.

Alternatives: Appleton 12 YO (low flavour, very average-nice), Plantation O.F.T.D (strong, salty caramel + a bit of funk, more than in Appleton imo, yet much closer to normal rum than Smith & Cross)

Considering the price, it has a lot of taste, it is very good for the people who like that type of rum. For the others I would recommend to try O.F.T.D which is kind of middle ground.
I have rated it very high, even though personally I don't like it much, but I think it deserves high notes, I just don't like this type of rum.

Notes: weird fruits, fried banana, but it is quite well balanced (has some darker notes)
Wood: almost none. but it has some dark notes, it is not just bright fruits style rum
Fruits: lots, but not exactly sweet ones, fried banana
Sweet: medium
Kick: high, but not harsh
Salty: none
Flavour: very high
Aftertaste: super long
Wine: none
Funk: super high

Had this at a restaurant with dinner. Assume it's 90 proof at least yet tasty, had it over rocks. Reasonable burn initially but a lot of flavor from typical rum profiles: vanilla, caramel, allspice. Not sure if this is available in local stores but worth buying

Nose: Caramel, banana, apples, misc rotting fruit, butter, smoke, a little peat.
Palate: Heavy Jamaican funk, molasses, oak, apple, honey.
Tail: Something interesting, though I can't totally place it (sour, but not citrus-like). A tiny bit of maple syrup. Moderate burn, but not too bad considering it's an overproof rum.

A very drinkable overproof with a whole lot of character. It reminds me a lot of Wray and Nephew unaged, but with milder flavors and a much more manageable "punch". It still has more than enough Jamaican funk for any cocktails that specifically call for a Jamaican, but IMO it can also substitute for anything that calls for an aged overproof.

It may take a couple glasses to acquire the taste of this rum when sipping - it's a bit atypical - but it's a great break from my usual Barbadian rums. It has now become a staple of my bar, and I have to restock it every couple months.

I expected to much after reading the reviews. It's very drinkable neat, the high abv was less present in the taste as expected. I didn't really recognize the fruity flavours and found the aftertaste nice but quite short. This was after the first glass, if the next glasses lead tot another point of view i'll update the review.

Maybe not intended to be a sipper... nonetheless it is a very decent rum to test the Jamaican medium/heavy ester-y pot still style. Tons of zests, banana, green olive... I don't remember what is in the blend but probably a good part from Hampden ? At least the profile is somewhat typical from Hampden.
Anyway just forget light cuban or over-sweetened rum from South America here : we are in the heavy, pungeant, deep flavours league.
OK there are more complex Jamaicans, lots of other better bottles in this style but not with this pricetag : the value is really excellent.
Used as a mixer it will transform your favorite cockail into something new. The powerful flavours really add something to any receipe.
To sum up, a good entry into big Jamaican rums. Cheap enough to be mixed but good enough to be sipped if you like this style.
Technically I give a good 7 but for its pricetag range I would give a 8 or 9.

I found glowing reviews all over the web on this one, so I had just had to try it. Opened the bottle and let it sit for a while. I don't really mind the smell, some people have stated it smells disgusting. Filled a shot glass and hesitantly began to sip. It does have some nice flavours, but I would call this undrinkable unless it's in a cocktail. In the mix with coke this is absolutely divine, but as with most other navy strength or overproof rums, it's absolutely imperative you get the dosage right. Get it right and you have a bottle of unique rum, a solid mixer. Get it wrong and you will probably have to throw it down the sink.
