10 Real McCoy Limited Edition 2019 14-Year Ratings

Only question with this one is the bourbon aging has the alcohol a bit high which is prevalent at first neat sip. Add some ice and this rum takes off like Scott Dixon at Indianapolis. It is a beautiful, nuanced and super flavorful rum that I fell luck to possess. Coffee bean, nay espresso, with nuance of dark cherry, leather, burnt caramel with sea salt and neatly packed away wild floral make this hot rod a killer. Highly recommended. I paired it with an Atabey cigar and fell into a Dalai Lama state of hyper consciousness. Ok, maybe overstating a bit. Man, though it is some very, very good stuff.

And I bought the last bottle on sale for only $68 US. I am not one to pass up a bargain on rums and I kept checking the website of a local liquor store chain. When they dropped their price from $80 to $68, this was my signal to drive 50 miles and find some other goodies in the area. I also scored a bottle of Clement XO from them for only $60 US, so this trip was worth all of my efforts.

Since I am no fan of the other Real McCoy Rums with most tasting too much like bourbon, I was not expecting to like this one at all. To my surprise, the bourbon aroma and taste is extremely subdued. This is a very good smooth tasting rum with no additives. The only other Bajan rum that I like better is Foursquare ECS Zinfandel Cask, and both of them are Limited Editions. So much for adding to my repeat purchases list. However, at this sale price, this one is still too expensive, but that did not figure into my rating.

Update May 7, 2021: My rating of 7 still stands since I found 65 rums that I like better than this one. The high ratings on this one are all from those with less than 50 reviews as of this date. I need say no more. Highly over rated for the money, even if on sale. And this is the same as Doorly's 14 Year Old, if you can find it.

The name truly tells the story. Very smooth with just a hint of sweetness. Very enjoyable. I liken to a high end bourbon drinkers rum. And the price is right. Cheers!

This rum was the 6th rum to my collection as I began about 3mos ago. Boy, did I set the bar high after tasting this one. This rum is amazing at 46% ABV. cannot taste the slightest kick from alcohol. It has a similar profile to bourbon/whiskey however I find it smoother. I prefer this one neat, or over ice. This one, unfortunately is difficult to find, and I have to make a drive to get it. At about $100 USD, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase again. Well worth it.

The Real McCoy 12 Year is one of my go to sipping rums with good reason so I expected a lot from the 14 year. Bottled at 46% abv.
Poured up and allowed to sit for a few moments. Aroma starts off smooth and spicy with alcoholic warmth and soft dry oak notes. As it opens up hints of cinnamon come forward.
Great balance in the flavor, warming but not hot. Soft vanilla, cinnamon and clove. Brown sugar and/or soft caramel. Softly sweet notes up front then drying in the middle leading to a fairly long drying and soft finish with some tannins. One would expect a 14 year aged to be oak heavy but it's not, not at all. Balance is awesome throughout as I usually expect from a high quality Barbados rum. A solid 9 in my book. A bit pricey for sure so not a great value but well worth it for those who love pure unadulterated Barbados rum!
My last comment would be to those who like sweetened rums. This may not be for you as it is pure rum with no additives. No sugar bomb here so if you don't like drier expressions take a pause before buying.

Something different about this rum and I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps it is not as sweet as some others and almost comes across as not as refined, but the flavor itself indicates this is the better rum. To me it is earthier than most rums, coming from an oaky walnut aroma and picking up a distinct smoked caramel flavor.
Very nice, very different.

Tasted at Laka Lono on 10/3/19. Yummerific! Coconuts and dates to the aroma. Maple vanilla and butterscotch flavors that linger long. A mild peppery bite at the finish. Delicious.

Very similar overall taste profile to Doorly's 12, just a little bolder, smoother, and richer. The extra two years and higher proof really help develop some of the characteristics that make Foursquare rum so good and unique. The salted carmel comes off the nose similar to the ECS '08. Very delicious and an excellent sipper.
