This was given to us as a present. As a big fan of Foursquare and Richard Seale's drive for transparent classification I probably would not have bought this:
1, No age declared other than the dubious "XO". On the back is states: "... it has reached what we consider to be an age that perfectly represents... " = off-putting and patronising marketing jargon!
2, No information on added sugar or flavouring.
3, Barrel identified as "Refill Hogshead" - I believe that relates to the volume, not the type of the cask. So more BS to impress the customer.
For the good parts:
- Presentation is smart. Fat ships decanter in a nice tin. Synthetic stopper.
- "Not chill filtered. No added colour."
In the glass: Deep copper, suggests quite a few years in cask.
Nose: Good aroma of dried fruit and nuts. No funky notes.
Mouth: The aromas carry straight on, supported by the 46% ABV, without those making your eyes water. Very smooth, in very much a Spanish style rather than Jamaican.
Throat: The alcohol is there, but not overwhelming. Gentle burn.
Lingering finish.
We finished the bottle in one evening (I am embarrassed to admit) with the help of a whisky and a port fan. There was agreement this was unexpectedly good.
NOTE: This review clearly differs from the previous one. But I am now prepared to go and buy it again to make sure...
