Ron Zacapa XO rum

Ron Zacapa XO

Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV

Ron Zacapa XO Rum is produced in the highlands of Guatemala where it is distillled from fresh cane juice. The rum is then aged from 6 to 23 years at 7544 feet above sea level at 62 °F (17 °C) using the solera process. The solera aging process incorporates barrels that previously held American whiskeys, sherries, wines and Cognac

The unique Ron Zacapa XO glass decantur features an impression of a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle

Smooth as silk, warming. Sweet sugar molasses aroma. Sweet but not cloying to my palate. A joy to drink if you prefer sweeter styles. If Navy rums or drier rums are your thing then this is not. I love it. Lots of character. I wouldn't hesitate to give this neat to someone wanting to step into aged rums. Some aficionados will not like the sweet aspect of this rum but it is what it is and for all of that it's simply a joy to sip. Raise one for me!
(UPDATE - my initial rating on this is from notes from a number of years ago. My palate had changed and while I still like this rum I would lower my original rating to a 7.5 or an 8. I find that these super sweet blends are becoming overbearing to my palate as I experience more and more drier and no sugar added rums. )

It’s good, though it has a bite of cognac is a bit overpowering.

Easy to see why it has such a good reputation. A great aged rum and will remain in my top 10 recommend you add to your collection and is a good value premium rum.

New to rum but this is a nice smooth rum. It’s not so expensive that I’d be scared to finish the bottle but not so cheap that I’d want to down the bottle quickly and replace it with another .

Very similar to Zacapa 23 but not as sweet and with more flavor.

This is for the late version (with the new drop-like bottle)

All in this bling-bling designed bottle smells like fake... but when you hold you feel like you are a millionaire with an exceptionnal refined aged spirit in your glass.
What does "XO" means for a Solera rum ? Seriously ? This abbreviation comes from Cognac and means 6-8 years old blend. This has no meaning on a undefined solera aging.

What is this incredibly dark color ? What did the put inside if not tons of caramel ? Even 15 years in new casks and tropical climate does not produce such dark hue.
In the glass, high viscosity and sticky drops on the walls show the richness of... no, shows the incredible amount of sugar they added in it ah ah.

Nose : some aromas comes form the casks . Cognac finish they say on the label. I don't know what they used. Sherry cask, PX or something ? whatever they used there must have been some sweet wine cask at some point. Not very refined nor complex but pleasant and easy. Actually it is maybe the best part. That being said the 40% abv is not very well integrated.

Palate : caramel, cheap chocolate and coco, syrup. Maybe some nuts and spices from the cask. Well it is easy and say drinkable (every booze seems "smooth"when you add some sugar syrup in it) , but where is the rum ?

Finish : short. The same aftertaste you have after eating a cheap candy. Your palate is dry and wants a big glass of water ^^

110€ for that cheap cloying liqueur ? A shame.
I would'nt say it is un-drinkable because the sugar+ alcohol+fudge combination has always something easy and pleasant but think I'd prefer to dissolve some fudge into cheap booze and have the same result.

Perfect for anything, although I think straight up with out ice should be the way. Perhaps for the first sips, at least.

A smooth sipping rum which should never be tampered with. Pour and enjoy!

This rum is a solid choice for sipping rums. Sweetish, but not overly so and the sweetness is tempered by its woody notes. Think sweet but dry, if that’s a thing.

Compared to other rums, I’d say it’s a bit one dimensional, but that’s not bad. It’s consistently pleasing and a great addition to anyone’s liquor cabinet.

This is a must test if given the chance to do so.
Such a smooth but elegant taste, might be a little pricy but well worth it.
