Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4) Distilled

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.

The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.

The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

The spice, vanilla and caramel are very present. It's a sweet rum and I agree not a real 23 years old but a blend. But I like it. Need to taste other Zacapa rum to have a better idea...

I like that this rum is also aged in sherry casks, not only in the usual bourbon casks, you can clearly smell that. And it does have some good aroma intensity. The age labelling "23 years" however is misleading, as it is a blend of rums up to 23 years old. Their minimum age is just 6 years. So according to normal age declaration standards, it should be called Zacapa 6-year.

I’ve always admired to packaging for Zacapa, but never been a big fan. However, this is a really good sipping rum.

Balanced flavor and aroma. Mild, slightly sweet, a little bit more sweet than Dictador 20. Very good for me.

Havent tried the XO yet, this one is extremely famous and it tastes ok, really sweet. But having tried real rums from Appleton, this one seems flat in comparison. Great for beginners.

Have you ever had a first date where the week leading up to it, you were as excited as a kid on Christmas Day, with the anticipation of what could be. Only to be left disappointed with the date itself, because it turned out to be a massive let down? Well that’s pretty much how I feel about this rum. Ron Zacapa Sistema 23 had been on my radar for months and when I finally pulled the trigger and bought it, the anticipation of it’s arrival was exhilarating. But my experience of this rum, is a huge let down. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s horrid, but by the same token, I’m definitely not going to say it’s delicious. To me it’s ordinary at best and tastes like any generic rum that you can buy at your local petrol station. In fact, I’ll go a step further. I had two doubles of Zacapa, one neat and the other mixed with Coca-Cola. Immediately afterwards, I did the same using Havana Club Especial, and for me, the Havana is better tasting, both neat and as a long drink. Now I suppose it’s not such a huge shock that I find the Havana more enjoyable, apart from the fact that the Zacapa is more than double in price! Now I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to spend £50 on a rum, I want it to be if not faultless, then at the very least, charming and appetising, and not bland, boring and just about passable as adequate.

Smooth and decadent. Mild acetone nose. Taste is better than the smell. Pillowy mouth feel. Very enjoyable rum. I learned about the added sugar and that knocks my score down a point or two. This 9 is now a 7.
