Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4) Distilled
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

For 5 years ago it was tasting better, to much of the younger rum now.
A little bit harsh and with this money you can get at least 5 better bottles.
I only started off exploring and reviewing rums last year...the first I tried were two spiced rums, then various Plantations, then Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva and El Dorado 12 before I learned to enjoy dry rums. I've reviewed them all and some folks say I'd be better off drinking liqueurs and flavored vodkas instead if those were the rums I favored. However I'll tell you what--I'm still a RUM drinker because that's what I like. I enjoy some of the sweeter variety--though they're admittedly in a separate category from non-sugared rums, many are very pleasant to sip or mix. The Ron Zacapa 23 Solera is even sweeter than the others I mentioned but to me it's not quite a sugar bomb, the base flavor is interesting and a bit funky--it tastes similar to Appleton 12 in terms of hogo. I don't recommend sugary mixers such as Coke with this, but it's sippable neat and good with tonic or club soda, plus a lime quarter. The best thing to drink is whatever floats your boat personally and is enjoyable. Online reviews can sometimes be informative, but take 'em with a large grain of salt and don't let anyone tell you what you're supposed to like or what "quality" is. I rated this one a 6 because it is indeed a bit sweeter than I now care for and as such I feel it's overpriced--there are better rums at the $60 level--but this one will remain in my cabinet to occasionally sip and share.
Great and well rounded. This is not genuine aged but non the less a great rum!
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

"The interplay between the wood of the barrel and the liquor contents gives the alcohol its flavour, colour and character..."

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.

I struggle with this one, smooth and sweet but it is all due to additives. Would love to try the Zacapa lineup in a pure form!
