Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4) Distilled
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

Very smooth honey and marzipan flavours which are very drinkable.
A great sipping rum, but as many have noted it is definitely too sweet to drink a lot of this in one go.
Contemplated giving this rum an 8, but the Zacapa XO edges and would therefore need to be given a 9, which i'm not quite prepared to do until I have sampled many more premium rums. So a solid 7 and either this or the XO is a must for any collection
Have always loved Zacapa, started with the lower priced ones but now can afford any of them! This one is very good, but not at the top for me
Rum di qualità. Frizzante e dolce al gusto. Corposo e ricco.
Admittedly, I am slightly biased to this rum as it was my first 'nice' rum that I picked up from a duty free on the way to a beach in the middle of nowhere... but boy did it kick off a journey.
First thing to get out of the way is that it's sweet, very sweet - I have since read unnaturally so, which is kind of a shame, but don't let purism and appendage measuring put you off - this is still a nice drink and a good place to start. Medium body, slight warmth with caramels, vanilla, toffy, hints of coffee and a slight oak. Not loads in the way of length other than sweetness. Moving forward I'd probably reserve this for mixers and advise spend a little more and go for a Ron Quorhum 30 Year Old instead!
End of the day, if you enjoy it, then crack on!
By far the most over rated rum in the world. There are so many additives, including sugar and glycerine, which is fine I guess, but they a deny it! It's marketed by Diageo which is one of the biggest liquor companies in the world. The rum has no flair, no passion, it's essentially an alcoholic sugar syrup and for the price you can get so much more. Do yourselves a favor if you want Guatemalan rum and go for ron botran. It's not as sweet, and it adds so much more passion and depth than this garbage
Zacapa is the reason I got into rum. My dad introduced me and loves it. I did too, but once I start something, I tend to dig deeper. After having tried some more rums, I now think Zacapa is at best a seven. The added sugar makes me want a glass of water besides it.
It's also not as fresh or exciting as many other rums. I think Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Edition is significantly better at around the same price point, if you're looking for a swwet dosed rum, that is.
I have read other notes in this forum about the production of this rum, and I learned much from those comments. While they heavily influenced my expectations, I did not learn anything from tasting this rum that disagreed with their comments. The nose is sweet lime and banana. The feel of the sip is smooth and sweet. There is no big burst of alcohol at the beginning, but the alcohol burn slowly develops along with butterscotch and artificial bananas; and the finish finish lingers making it nice for recreational sipping. I did try it as the topper for a Mai Tai, and it goes badly. The combined sweetness of the ingredients set one's teeth on edge.
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Overly sweet

Some of the casks used in this blend are apparently Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, and it shows. Very sweet, sherried flavours that were way over the top for me. Things settled a bit with a few drops of water, but still a quite disappointing rum given its hype and reputation.
As for tasting notes, I got dried fruits, dark chocolate, a bit of coffee and vanilla on the nose; the taste was very sweet and PX-ish, with burnt sugar, toffee, a touch of figs, and then a weird tannin-like flavour in the development, before the finish. The finish was short and sweet, with chocolate, spices and ripe grapes. Some more things come out with water, vanilla and spices predominantly. In sum a fairly overrated "rum liqueur" in my book.
